Southwell Racecourse Tips & Stats Guide

We take a closer look at one of the busiest racecourses in the UK

Southwell Racecourse hosts flat and jump racing but is predominantly best known for its all-weather Tapeta track that sees racing throughout the year and which has recently been floodlit.

It is one of the busiest racecourses in the UK, with over eight meetings a month through the winter.

The all-weather course at Southwell has been compared to a US-style track, and on occasion, trainer Aidan O’Brien has used Southwell for racecourse gallops to prepare his horses for the Breeders Cup.

So, although the mighty Galileo has galloped around Southwell, the standard of most of the racing at the course is more low-key, with no Listed, Group or Graded races run there.

However, Southwell is a vital cog in the UK horse racing scene, particularly through the winter when other meetings fall foul of the weather.

We also highlight two potential betting angles to look at when placing your Southwell bets.

Stamina is key

The flat course at Southwell is a galloping track, and there is typically plenty of pace in the early stages, so stamina is vital - look for a horse that finishes its races strongly or has won over slightly further.

Up with the Pace

Due to the tightness of the turns at Southwell on the jump course, it’s advantageous to back horses that like to be up with the pace on good ground - very few horses win from off the pace on good ground.

Top Southwell Jockeys

Danny Tudhope and Ben Curtis are the jockeys to follow at Southwell on the flat - Tudhope has a 24% strike rate at the track, while Curtis has ridden the most winners at Southwell over the last five seasons, with a 23% strike rate.

While over the obstacles, Nico de Boinville and Harry Skelton are the ones to keep onside, but also watch out for Beau Morgan, who rarely rides at Southwell, but when he does take notice, four of his last eight rides at the course have won.

Top Southwell Trainers

On the Tapeta course, keep an eye out for horses trained by Richard Hughes and George Boughey - Hughes has a 28% strike rate in recent seasons with his runners at Southwell, while Boughey sits on 24%.

Jump racing fans should watch out for Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson runners, who boast a 33% and 31% strike rate, respectively.

Southwell Free Bets & Betting Offers

As one of the busiest racecourses in the UK, Southwell is a regular fixture on Sky Sports Racing, with plenty of betting offers from the leading online bookmakers to enjoy throughout the year.

Through the winter, it has occurred that Southwell is the only course raceable due to inclement weather, so watch out for bet offers and enhanced odds on the action when that happens.

BetGoodwin have excellent horse racing offers, and their brand ambassador is jockey Hayley Turner, who is local to Southwell and who honed her skill at the course as a teenager riding for trainer Mark Polglase in the late 1990s.

Southwell Racecourse Layout & Info

Southwell Racecourse is located in Nottinghamshire, England, about six miles from Newark-on-Trent.

Flat Racing

The Tapeta flat course is a mile-and-a-quarter oval with a run from the home turn of three furlongs, with five-furlong races held on the straight via a spur where it can be an advantage to be drawn low.

Known as being extremely fair, there are very few hard luck stories on the flat at Southwell.

Jump Racing

The jump course at Southwell is a tight, left-handed track with a strong emphasis on speed on good ground, whereas heavy going can see very few finishers.

The racing at Southwell tends to be lower quality, and the track does not host any Listed, Group or Graded races.

However, it’s an exciting course to have a bet at with competitive action throughout the year with flat and jump action for punters to enjoy.
