Women’s World Cup 2023
This year’s showcase event will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand and the games will be played across 10 stadiums in nine different cities.
For the first time ever there will be 32 teams competing in the Women’s World Cup, with eight groups made up of four teams in a round robin format, another clear indicator of the progression of the Women’s game.
The top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament, and the knockout stages continue until the final on the 20th of August.
The Lionesses reigned victorious in the Women’s 2022 Euros and will be looking for back-to-back tournament successes as Sarina Weigman’s side set their sights on conquering the globe.
Another major breakthrough for the progression in the sport is the fact that 25% of the entrants are made up of debutants with Haiti, Republic of Ireland, Morocco, Panama, Philippines, Portugal, Vietnam and Zambia all competing for the first time.

So I am going with heart and head on this one and I am backing The Lionesses to win the World Cup.
I think that 9/2 is a decent price and even with the injuries to the squad I have a good feeling about Sarina Weigman and the team coming into the tournament and I think that Women’s Super League player of the year Rachel Daly could be electric for us leading the line for the first time in a tournament.

Women’s World Cup Groups
Group A - Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand, Philippines
Group A could provide us with some entertaining games, we have a host nation in New Zealand as well as a debut for the Philippines who will be looking to disrupt their European counterparts on the big stage.
If I had to side with a group winner I would put my money on Hege Riise’s Norway who have a rich tradition in this competition, lifting the trophy in 1995 and competing for the trophy on nine occasions. They enter the tournament in a poor run of form with two defeats and two draws from their last four games, but these results have come against Denmark, Spain, France and Sweden, who are some of the favourites to go the distance.
The fight for second place is where this group could be really interesting as I don’t think there is much to separate the other three nations, so we could potentially see a host nation or a debutant make the knockout stages.
Group B - Australia, Republic of Ireland, Nigeria, Canada
Host nation Australia can be considered a dark horse for the trophy given their recent showings, beating the likes of Sweden 4-0, Spain 3-2 and England 2-0 in the last 12 months.
They will fancy themselves to go far in this tournament and in front of a home crowd who knows, could they potentially go the distance? The Matilda’s would be my bet for winning group B (priced at 4/9) closely followed by Canada in 2nd place who I expect will make the knockout stages. Sadly for Nigeria and the Republic of Ireland I can see them falling short but putting on a good show.
Group C - Spain, Costa Rica, Zambia, Japan
I expect Spain to run away with this group and rack up some goals in the meantime. Despite the major disharmony within the Spanish national team which had seen 15 players refuse to play under manager Jorge Vilda (some of which have now accepted a World Cup call-up), they still boast a wealth of talent in their squad including Barcelona teammates Putellas, Paredes and Bonmati.
La Roja won all eight of their qualifying games to finish top of Group B ahead of Ukraine and Scotland and will be a major force over the competition, given their goal scoring prowess having scored 39 goals in their last 12 games in all competitions.
Alexia Putellas is the current Ballon d’Or holder and is the only female player to have won it twice in consecutive seasons, and she will be looking to shoot Spain to World Cup glory for the first time in the Women’s game. Beyond Spain I fully expect Japan to take second place. Costa Rica have some good flair players and will give us some showboat moments, while Zambia will be looking to make an impression in their first Women’s World Cup appearance.
Group D - England, Haiti, Denmark, China
Group D sees Euro winners England battle it out with Denmark, China and Haiti who are competing for the first time in the World Cup. I expect it to be plain sailing for The Lionesses and I imagine them winning all three of their games to top the group and coast through to the knockout stages.
England suffered their first defeat in 30 games last time out against host nation Australia and in many people’s eyes are the strongest team on the planet right now. Will that defeat have shaken their confidence? It’s also worth mentioning that The Lionesses have had some serious injuries hampering their usual starting eleven.
It’s going to be a different picture entirely to the one we saw lift the Euro trophy in 2022 with captain Leah Williamson missing because of a torn ACL, we will have no Beth Mead who also tore her ACL as well as Fran Kirby who is sidelined by a knee injury. With the retirements of Ellen White and Jill Scott this is a new look England coming into the World Cup.
Group E - United States, Vietnam, Netherlands, Portugal
Four-time winners and bookmakers favourites for the trophy the United States are of course my pick to win the Group A. I still don’t think they will be my bet for the overall winners at the end of the tournament, and I am not tempted by the 5/2 price being offered.
I expect them to come through this group comfortably, if there are to be any scratches they will be coming from the way of the Netherlands who held them to a 2-2 draw in the Olympics. The Netherlands are the side I anticipate taking 2nd place and reaching the knockouts.
Group F - France, Jamaica, Brazil, Panama
Watch out for the french this tournament, they could be a force under new manager Herve Renard who looks to have rejuvenated the team. All noises coming out of the french camp are very positive about the vibe in the dressing room and they are enjoying playing under Renard.
Players who had been previously frozen out are now back in the picture and the results have been good with two wins over Columbia (5-2) and Canada (2-1) since his arrival. Another team to look out for in this group are Brazil, who will have the legendary Marta potentially playing her last ever World Cup. No other player has scored more World Cup goals than Marta (17) and she is often regarded as the best women’s footballer in history.
Brazil have never managed to beat France in any of their previous 11 meetings so I have them down for that 2nd qualification spot.
Group G - Sweden, South Africa, Italy, Argentina
Sweden will feel like they have unfinished business with the World Cup, having been runners-up in 2003 and three third placed finishes they will be hoping that this is their year.
The 1984 Euro winners are my tip to top Group G after a dominant qualifying campaign where they topped Group A winning seven of their eight fixtures, in a group made up of Finland, Slovakia, Georgia and the Republic of Ireland. Behind them the bookies next favourites to win Group G are Italy priced at 7/2 and it is hard to disagree with that.
Argentina have made the World Cup three times but have never managed to get out of the group stages and South Africa have only been here once, in 2019 where they also failed to make it out of the group stage.
Group H - Germany, Morocco, Colombia, South Korea
And finally Group H has competitors from Europe, South America, Asia and Africa. No surprises here that I expect the overwhelming favourites Germany to win this group at a canter but I will not be touching it in the betting markets with the price as low as 1/20.
Second place is where I think it will be a toss up between Colombia and South Korea. I am really looking forward to watching Colombian forward Linda Caicedo who could be the next big thing in women’s football from what I have seen.
At just 18 years old and named the best player at the 2022 Copa America Femenina she has the world at her feet and she will want to show off her talents I am sure of that.
Women’s World Cup Schedule
The Women’s World Cup kicks off on the 20th of July with host nation New Zealand facing Norway at 8am GMT. Following on from that, fellow hosts Australia lock horns with debutants the Republic of Ireland.
The group stages run right through from the 20th of July until the final group game is played on the 3rd of August. The competition will then take a two-day break and return for the last-16 knockout fixtures to be played between the 5th - 8th of August. The Quarter-finals will see the tournament narrowed down to eight competitors with fixtures scheduled to be played on the 11th and 12th of August.
We will then have a three day break before the Semi-finals commence on the 15th and 16th of August where teams will leave it all on the line to make the final on the 19th of August.

Predictably the reigning champions the United States are the tournament favourites and that will largely be based on their track-record in this competition, having lifted the trophy on a record four occasions. Vlatko Andonovski’s side come into the event on the back of eight straight victories, but they are far from invincible, having suffered three consecutive defeats to Spain, England and Germany in 2022. I personally think the price is a bit short and the value lies elsewhere.
England 9/2
Is football coming home? Can Sarina Weigman make it back-to-back tournament successes and follow up that famous Euro 2022 victory? If you fish around you can get a price of 9/2 for The Lionesses to go all the way with Bet365 and Betway. It will be a new look team compared to what we saw in the Euro’s but believe me, England are still well covered in every department, and are seen by many as the team to beat coming into this tournament.
Spain 6/1
Despite the fiasco with Jorge Vilda and a number of senior players Spain have an incredibly strong squad, including the current Ballon d’Or holder Alexia Putellas. The Spanish team plays much like the men’s side, very progressive with the ball and plenty of possession, and will be one of the highest scoring teams in this tournament, if not the highest having had a look at the groups.
Germany 7/1
Many will be surprised to see Germany priced at 7/1 with Bet365 given they are ranked as the 2nd best team in the world by FIFA. The Frauen Team have won the World Cup on two occasions, where they had back-to-back successes in 2003 and 2007. They have also won a record eight European Championships so are a team littered with trophies. After finishing as the runners-up to England in the Euro’s they will be looking to go one step further.
France and Australia 10/1
France and Australia are both tied in the market at 10/1 to lift the trophy. Australia have put in some big performances in friendlies leading up to the tournament, beating England and Sweden as well as defeating Spain in the FFA Cup Of Nations.
