The Best Horse Racing Tips for Newbury & Leopardstown on Tuesday

Top quality Horse Racing between the Christamas and New Year period continues on Tuesday afternoon with some exciting National Hunt action from the meetings at Newbury in Britain and Leopardstown in Ireland.

We will provide Horse Racing tips, previews and predictions for two races from the Berkshire track, together with a Horse Racing tip for Leopardstown’s feature race, the Grade 1 Matheson Hurdle at 2.25pm.

Our Tip for the 2.25pm at Leopardstown:

A significant Champion Hurdle trial featuring the first and second in Punchestown’s Grade 1 Unibet Morgiana Hurdle last month. On that occasion, the Gordon Elliott-trained Abacadabras came home a neck in front of favourite Saint Roi, who many considered an unlucky loser after failing to get the clearest of runs.

Both horses will attempt to enhance their Cheltenham claims with a victory here. But the pair may not have things all their own way and a better value bet could be last season’s Champion Hurdle runner-up Sharjah, impressive winner of this race for the last two years.

The son of Doctor Dino may not be the most consistent of performers but is a seriously classy hurdler on his day. As his record shows, this race obviously suits the mount of amateur Patrick Mullins. A repeat of either of those wins, or his three length second to Epatante when conceding that mare 7lb, should see the seven-year-old go very close.

Our Tip for the 2.40pm at Newbury:

The Venetia Williams-trained Cuban Pete is on a hat-trick here following victories at Stratford and Hereford this season and is sure to have his supporters. The eight-year-old could find this much tougher off a revised mark of 124 however, whereas top weight Manofthemountain is taken to outclass his rivals in an attempt to make it 5 from 7 over fences.

The Emma Lavelle stable is in good form at the moment and the mount of 3lb claimer Ben Jones has looked an improving chaser since joining her current handler from Jamie Snowden last year.

The son of Mahler may have been beaten some 52 lengths at Cheltenham on his most recent start two months ago. But the gelding ran well for a long way at Prestbury Park behind subsequent King George V1 Chase winner Froden and Cloth Cap, who went on to record a comfortable win in the competitive Ladbroke Trophy.

While Manofthemountain finished very tired there, the horse has been given plenty of time to recover and in a much easier race can get back to winning ways. Of the rest, the Grade 2 winning hurdler Redford Road is beginning to look attractively weighted on a chase mark of 132. Sam Twiston-Davies’ mount will be more at home here rather than when getting bogged down in the mud at Haydock last time.

Our Tip for the 3.15pm at Newbury:

Despite only six runners, a tremendous renewal of this Grade 1 novices’ hurdle. The Evan Williams-trained Star Gate is the highest rated on 147 (courtesy of a Grade 2 win at Sandown), 4lb in front of Bravemansgame and Does He Know.

It is the Paul Nicholls runner who is expected to go off favourite however, following hugely impressive wins at Exeter and over course and distance last month. The mount of Harry Cobden looks an exciting prospect but in receipt of weight from her five rivals, the Alan King-trained mare The Glancing Queen could prove the one to beat.

The mount of Tom Cannon won a Grade 2 Bumper at Aintree last year before finishing a respectable eighth at the festival behind Ferny Hollow and Appreciate It, despite being hampered in the early stages of the race.

An easy winner of her only start over hurdles, at Warwick last month, the daughter of Jeremy can make the best of the 7lb mares’ allowance in a fascinating contest.
