Kai Watson's Scottish Football Tips
Saturday 12 April
Celtic v Kilmarnock
- Celtic to win and BTTS (No)
After a poor performance and result last weekend Celtic will be looking to bounce back at home on Saturday. They have the best home league record by six points over Rangers this season and have only conceded six goals at Parkhead all season.
Three of those goals came in the last Old Firm matchup and the other three were scored by Aberdeen over two different matches. Celtic have also kept the most clean sheets in the league this season, not conceding in 20 of 32 games domestically.
Kilmarnock are the third-joint lowest scorers in the Scottish Premiership with 37 goals in 32 matches. They’ve scored six in their last five matches, with two of them coming in the last outing against Motherwell. They’ve been rather weak up front this season though, after Bruce Anderson and his nine goals, their next top scorer only has four.
Kilmarnock’s goal difference this season is -16 compared to Celtic’s +78, a staggering 94 goals difference between the two. After not scoring in their last outing, Celtic will come out all guns blazing and look to make amends for that last defeat.
In their previous two meetings this season, the aggregate score is 6-0 to Celtic after a 4-0 win at Parkhead in August and a 2-0 win at Rugby Park in December. The Celtic fans will undoubtedly want a performance to shout about given last weekend a relatively poor run of form since January, although they're still well clear at the top.
They can’t win the league on Saturday with a victory, but if they win and Aberdeen beat Rangers on Sunday they’ll be champions (it’s only a matter of time anyway).
Motherwell v Hearts
- BTTS and over 2.5 goals
This is potentially the game that means the most this weekend in the Scottish Premiership. This game can determine who gets the last spot in the top six for the split. Hearts’ fate is in their own hands, if they beat Motherwell then they’ll finish in sixth place before the split takes place.
The last time the sides met at Fir Park it was a cracking game in August that Motherwell came away 3-1 victors from. The ‘Well haven’t won in their last three and Hearts haven’t scored in their last two. However, this game means so much to both sides that they need to go for and aim for the victory.
A draw for Hearts is only good enough if Ross County beat St. Mirren at the SMISA Stadium, which seems unlikely. If Hearts win that result doesn’t matter but only a win for Motherwell and St. Mirren failing to win will get them that top six spot.
Getting into the top six would give either of the three an outside shot at catching fifth and getting a European spot so a lot is riding on this game.
That’s why I think there will be goals and for both sides, both need to go for the victory, particularly Motherwell, which should open the game right up and make it an exciting affair.
Raith v Airdrie
- Over 2.5 goals
Raith Rovers are in excellent form and haven’t lost in their last six matches. Airdrie have also found form at the best possible time, winning three of their last five, only losing one and now coming within three points of Dunfermline in ninth place.
Raith have scored nine in their last five and Airdrie have scored 12 in their last five with the latter side back to playing that free-flowing attacking football they were famous for in previous seasons. Raith have managed to keep four clean sheets in their last five but with how Airdrie are playing and how much every point means at this stage, I can’t see them continuing their excellent clean sheet record of late.
To add to the goals being scored by both sides, there hasn’t been a draw between the sides in their last six meetings, this is another that looks to be an incredibly exciting fixture.
Dumbarton v Cove Rangers
- Cove Rangers to win
Dumbarton have won their last two matches and Cove have lost their last two but the fact reminds that the Sons currently sit bottom of League One and Cove are second. Arbroath currently sit 11 points clear at the top with four games to go and can win the league this weekend if they beat Stenhousemuir.
However, second place is still well and truly up for grabs with Cove sitting level on points with Stenny currently. Second place means missing the first round of play-off so it really does still mean a lot.
This is why it’s massive that Cove turn their form around now before they fall to third, or even out of the promotion play-off places completely. Alloa currently sit in fifth but they’re only four points behind second and third so it’s within their reach as the season comes to a close.
Cove will be hoping that Adam Emslie (8G/7A) and Findlay Marshall (7G/3A), both on loan from Aberdeen, can step up to the plate and help them go a step closer to securing their spot in the promotion play-offs.
Bonnyrigg Rose v East Fife
- East Fife to win
East Fife’s recent drop in form has allowed Peterhead to rise to the top of League Two and they now find themselves four points behind. They’ve lost three of their last five including a shock 1-0 defeat to second bottom Forfar last time out.
Bonnyrigg Rose have been in absolute freefall though and have one draw and four defeats in their last five, conceding 11 goals in those matches. In fact, Bonnyrigg actually haven’t managed a victory in their last TEN outings.
East Fife will want to get back to the form that had them top of the league, particularly with Edinburgh City now only four points behind them in third place.
Dick Campbell has plenty of experience in these situations and will know exactly what to do to get a tune out of his players. With Bonnyrigg sitting bottom, the odds were a surprise one for me.
Surely this is a banker, right?
Scottish Football Tips - Weekly Predictions from Freebets
Scottish football is a world full of tradition and surprises, making it a great focus for fans and anyone interested in betting.
Whether you follow big clubs like Celtic and Rangers as fans, or you’re new to the Scottish leagues, having some helpful betting tips can make things more enjoyable and interesting. We may even improve your betting choices from time to time!
SPFL Betting Tips
Start by getting to know the basics. The Scottish Premiership, the top league, is often led by Celtic and Rangers. Usually too strong for the rest, but other clubs like Hearts, Hibernian, and others, can pull off unexpected wins, shocking the big two.
One point to remember is that the Scottish weather can quietly affect games a little more than in other parts of the UK, though of course, players are generally used to it. Scotland’s cold, wet, and windy, sometimes even in summer, and this can all change how matches play out.
Like any other football league, how a team has been playing recently is very important.
In Scotland’s smaller league system, teams face each other a little more often, so recent results, both in terms of last fixtures and previous head to head meetings, can tell you a lot. With this, it's important for you to be as up to date as the best betting sites with information, and recent records.
Finally, don't forget to check for things like injuries or changes in the line up. A missing key player or someone coming back can make a big difference in any football league. As you move down the footballing pyramid, injuries can often take their toll more than at the top, with smaller squads, and replacements of a lower quality the norm for many.
Scottish Lower League Betting Tips
Don’t forget the lower leagues when you are looking at betting on Scottish football.
The Championship, League One, and League Two have smaller teams involved that might not get much attention but these leagues can offer good opportunities for punters, especially if you become an expert in one particular league.
Alongside the league action, there's also regular cup games, which add a whole new layer to Scottish football betting.
This can also be a minefield though, as per other leagues in Europe, changed teams, resting key players and how seriously these competitions are being taken by some are all additional questions that should be in your thought process before placing your bets.
