Wrexham v Reading Match Preview

Wrexham and Reading have enjoyed solid starts to their League One campaigns, accruing four points apiece, courtesy of home wins over Wycombe and Wigan respectively, and away point at a promotion favourite – Bolton and Birmingham.

The Red Dragons are understandably hotly fancied in the markets off the back of successive promotions and with financial resources that have afforded Phil Parkinson’s side a squad more than good enough to compete around the top half at this level.

And yet, the visitors look underrated with a supremely talented young squad, including the likes of Ben Elliott, who boasts outstanding spatial awareness, which he demonstrated in a canny dribble to set up Kelvin Ehibhationham’s second last week, following Charlie Savage’s first half opener.

Six years ago, the now-Cameroon international was regarded alongside Jamal Musiala, at 15, as one of the next big things to come out of Chelsea – and, on early evidence, he’s starting to show glimpses of that ability under a quality coach in Rubén Sellés.

With other prospects like goalkeeper Joel Pereira, defenders Amadou Mbengue and Tyler Bindon, midfielder Savage and wide man Femi Azeez also starting to show their international potential, Reading could be ones to watch – both this season, and at the STōK Cae Ras.

While Wrexham impressed against Wycombe on day one, they had goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo to thank for their point and clean sheet at Bolton the following week, so there could be value in siding with the visitors – given that an even-looking contest is priced so strongly in favour of the hosts.
