Wrexham v Northampton Match Preview
Northampton might perform better this season against the better teams.
Seven of their eight points, so far this season, have come against Exeter, currently in the top 10, Barnsley, also in the top 10 after reaching the Play-Offs the year before, and Huddersfield, who were a Championship side last season.
As we saw in their 3-1 victory at Huddersfield, the Cobblers can be effective at stealing the ball high up, where they have dangerous operators in Tariq Fosu, Tyler Roberts and Mitch Pinnock.
Against deeper-lying opposition, like Mansfield last weekend, the Teyn can find it harder to unleash those forwards because they don’t have the same ball-progression qualities in midfield as they had last season in the absence of star loanee Marc Leonard.
Although, even against the Stags, Jon Brady’s side were unfortunate not to go in ahead at half-time with the control they exerted, and deserved at least a point from the game.
As such, Northampton will believe they can go to the Racecourse Ground and get what some might perceive as an unlikely result, especially with the spirit in the camp that Brady has cultivated.
Wrexham are understandably favourites, but not to the point whereby their opponents only have a 41.7% chance of avoiding defeat, as the 7/5 quotes imply.
Phil Parkinson’s men have enjoyed impeccable home form, but they’ve had favourable fixtures including Shrewsbury and Crawley – in which the former didn’t turn up, and the latter had the better chances.
Wrexham have also drawn blanks in their previous two, with a goalless draw at Leyton Orient last weekend followed by a midweek 1-0 loss at Stevenage.
