West Indies v England Match Preview
A feature of this series has been underperformance with the bat from the West Indies. Only once in three matches have they posted above 160, and when they did - 182-9 in game one - England chased it down for the loss of two wickets.
With Romario Shepherd coming in at number seven, they look at least a batting option light.
Another significant reason - you could argue the main one - is Saqib Mahmood’s superb form with the ball. He claimed three more wickets in Game Three, and he now has nine overall.
You have to say that England have the hosts right where they want them and must put their foot on the throat. From winning back-to-back World Cup titles in 2019 (50-over) and 2022 (T20), they’ve fallen a long way. So the road back needs some signs of ruthless dominance.
For example, it would leave a sour taste if this series finished 3-2.
I don’t expect it to because of what I’ve just said about the hosts’ batting.
I’ve put together a bet builder double with bet365 on an England win and Mahmood to strike at least twice in the match. That’s available at an enticing 10/3. That would have been a winner in each of the first three fixtures.
It makes sense to stick with Saqib
Before I get onto Saqib Mahmood, I like the look of powerful West Indies’ captain Rovman Powell to hit two or more sixes, available at 7/4 with betway.
From the middle order, he has hit eight in three innings in this series.
Backing Mahmood again surely makes sense, doesn’t it? He’s been sensational so far. And it surprises me somewhat that he is 2/1 with betway to take two or more wickets in the match. To me, that’s a juicy price.
Another surprise is that left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein is 4/1 to be the West Indies’ top bowler in the match. He is their leading wicket-taker with five in the series, yet betfair believe six other bowlers on their list are more likely.
Realistically, they see him as fourth favourite as three of the names aren’t even in the squad for the remainder of the series.
To finish, I’m going to take on William Hill’s #YourOdds 19/2 shot on Jos Buttler to score a fifty in the match and Nicholas Pooran to be the home side’s clear top run-scorer in the match.
That would be quite the watch if those two got going in St Lucia. Never mind watching Strictly Come Dancing on a Saturday night, sit down and watch Jos the Boss and Nicky P!
