West Ham v Manchester City Match Preview

The Julen Lopetegui era at West Ham has now truly begun and it has begun thanks to the Hammers’ 2-0 win over Crystal Palace last Saturday. All square at the interval at Selhurst Park but the visitors squaring off a victory thanks to goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen.

The perfect tonic after defeat at home to Aston Villa the Saturday before and even though, Jhon Duran’s goal would give Unai Emery’s men all three points, there were still plenty of positives to take during West Ham’s first showing under their new boss.

Those positives have only increased after earning victory in their first London derby of the season and although Lopetegui’s men rode their luck at times – none more so than when Eberechi Eze hit the bar for Palace, they were still good value for their eventual success.

While on the evidence that has been put forward in the first two weeks of the season, they could be good value for a return to Europe in 12 months’ time and after forays in both the Europa and Europa Conference League over the past few years, West Ham have a taste for the continent.

If they are to return to European exercise, then consistency is going to have to be key for the London Stadium outfit. Under previous boss David Moyes, they were always capable of turning it on but more capable of being inconsistent.

Of course, the poster boys of consistency are none other than Manchester City and after getting the better of Ipswich last Saturday, not only is it two wins from two at the start of a new season but it is also 25 Premier League games unbeaten in total.

Halfway to setting a record for the longest Premier League unbeaten run of all time but before any talk of beating Arsenal’s 49 without defeat gets any louder, the primary aim is to get to the international break with their 100% record intact.

Something that looked under threat a week ago and when Sammie Szmodics coolly slotted home for Ipswich, it was not only their travelling support that were stunned by what had just unfolded at the Etihad.

Unfortunately, all that goal managed to do was awaken the beast which is Manchester City and with Pep Guardiola’s men quickly finding the stride, the Tractor Boys were eventually handed a bruising 4-1 defeat.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with Manchester City win on its own not offering much in the way of value, the value in my opinion is back the defending champions to win both halves on Saturday at odds of 2/1.

In addition to this, I am going to back Savio to open his account for Manchester City and in doing so, also score the opening goal of the game. This outcome is priced at 8/1 and looks rather nice on my betting slip.
