Ukraine v Belgium Match Preview

Picking Up Wins

Before a ball was kicked in Germany, the general consensus was that Group E was always going to be the most open. Fast forward to preparations before Wednesday night and the table could not be any more open than it currently is.

Romania and Slovakia first putting Ukraine and Belgium on the canvas, Ukraine and Belgium returning the favours to the chins of Slovakia and Romania. The four cruiserweights duking it out and all now with three points from the judges’ scorecards.

Which means when Ukraine face Belgium on Wednesday, not only will they be trying to get the better of each other but they will also have a keen eye on the events that will undoubtedly unfold in Frankfurt.

As things stand, Romania top the group by virtue of goals scored, with Belgium second. The Belgians have a better goal difference than Slovakia, who in turn have a better goal difference than the Ukrainians.

Which begs the question as to how to go about things in Stuttgart? That is the dilemma being posed to both Serhiy Rebrov in the Ukrainian corner and management counterpart Domenico Todesco in the Belgian one opposite.

Do you go for a draw and have a chance of finishing either second or third in the group – third would probably see you through to the Round of 16 but it may be tense getting there or do you go for the jugular and go for the win?

A lot will depend on what the score is in Frankfurt and if either Slovakia or Romania find themselves ahead, then the will to win will only increase in Stuttgart. Should this other Group E clash end in a draw, there could be a non-aggression pact here in Frankfurt.

If you have not lost track of the possible permutations, the simplest way to describe it, is win and you are in. Do what either Ukraine or Belgium did in their second group stage game and victory in the third, will then mean a fourth tournament appearance in the Round of 16.

With the way late goals are being scored in the past few days, this could be a game and a group that is decided in its final few seconds. If you’re having your dinner around 6.45pm, you may want to put it back to just after 7pm instead.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with Belgium finally clicking on Saturday against Romania, I think they will have too much for the Ukrainian opponents. With this in mind, I am backing a Red Devils win and under 2.5 total goals at 10/3.

In addition to this, I am going to opt for Kevin De Bruyne to steal the show. A maximum of two goals can be scored in this game, I am backing him to score them both. The Manchester City man in the two or more market is priced at 12/1. Therefore, two is great, but three seals a lesser fate.
