Tamworth v Tottenham Match Preview
Tottenham will be in high spirits as they head to the Midlands to take on non-league Tamworth in the FA Cup Third Round on Sunday afternoon.
A morale-boosting 1-0 win over Liverpool in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final at home could prove to be a turning point for Ange Postecoglou whose side have been ravaged by injuries.
Rodrigo Bentancur was carted off the pitch with a worrying head injury, but he later confirmed he was all fine, and with four minutes remaining of normal time Lucas Bergvall struck the winner after being set up by Dominic Solanke.
Tamworth, who are four tiers below Tottenham, have seen their form drop off lately with two defeats on the spin.
Despite the huge gulf in quality between the two sides, Tamworth will be eager to produce a David vs Goliath-style shock.
But will Tamworth be lambs to the slaughter (excuse the pun) at the Lamb Ground? I’ve pored over the betting markets and plucked out a couple of lines to accompany my Tamworth v Tottenham predictions.
Tottenham to cruise through to Round 4
Although the win over Liverpool provided the perfect tonic to Tottenham’s recent woes, they know they can’t take anything for granted.
Tamworth have already claimed some scalps in the form of Macclesfield, Huddersfield Town, and Burton Albion to reach this stage, and while there will be a crowd of just 5,000 at the Lamb Ground, they will look to make life as difficult as possible for the visitors by getting up in their faces.
Tottenham won’t fear facing Tamworth as they have won all nine of their FA Cup ties against non-league opposition, with their last defeat coming against Norwich in 1914/15, but the football pyramid was very different back then.
Amazingly, there have been 50 FA Cup ties between Premier League and non-league clubs over the past 33 years, but non-league sides have triumphed on just two occasions.
In Tottenham’s most recent FA Cup clash against non-league opponents Mariner four years ago, Tottenham cantered to a 5-0 victory with Carlos Vinicius plundering home a hat-trick.
This will be just Tamworth’s fourth appearance in the FA Cup Third Round, so they will probably be enjoying an occasion, but Tottenham could run rampant.
For the first of my Tamworth v Tottenham picks, I’m going with the visitors to win both halves which is available at an attractive 11/10 with Betfred.
Tottenham to have plenty left in the tank
Against Liverpool, Tottenham were forced to work extremely hard, and it was some last-ditch defending at times by Radu Dragusin that saved their bacon.
Well, his clearance off the line from a superb half-volley from Trent Alexander-Arnold, exemplified this, but they will be looking to monopolise possession against Tamworth.
Perhaps it is worth noting that since his first season in English football (2015/16), no player has had more FA Cup goal involvements than Son Heung-Min with 25 (14 goals and 11 assists), so Tottenham will look to create devastating attacks and pounce on any loose ball.
I don’t envisage any problems for Postecoglou’s men, and for the sake of value, I’ve gone for the Correct Score market for my Tamworth Tottenham predictions. William Hill has offered appetising odds of 14/1 for Tottenham to clinch an emphatic 5-0 victory which will keep the good feeling going ahead of a crunch North London Derby with Arsenal on Wednesday evening.
