Stoke v Plymouth Match Preview
Mark Robins should be a good appointment for Stoke.
The advantage the 55-year-old brings is the operational nous he provides, having managed the club as much as team at Coventry, with a big say in all footballing matters – and, as phenomenal results over seven years suggest, he got a lot spot on.
Seeing as sporting director Jonathan Walters is inexperienced, having a manager of Robins’ experience of how to build a successful club could be extremely valuable.
On the other hand, Robins’ big-picture focus means he isn’t always the one on the grass getting his hands dirty, so his tenure could be defined by how good his assistants, Paul Nevin and James Rowberry, turn out to be.
Given that Nevin assisted Southgate with England for four years, and that Rowberry has great reviews from his time at Cardiff before assisting Craig Bellamy with Wales having previously been Head of Elite Education with the FAW, these coaches should bring a similar level of quality to that Robins had for most of his Coventry tenure in Adi Viveash.
And, with a talented squad in place as well as an excellent academy, everything could be in place for Stoke to start to turn resources into results – something they’ve struggled to do since coming down from the Premier League in 2018, as they find themselves on course for a seventh consecutive bottom half finish.
The positivity from Robins’ appointment should see Stoke start his reign with a victory, against a managerless Plymouth Argyle side who have taken just two points from 13 away league games.
