Sheffield Wednesday v Plymouth Match Preview

Although the race for Championship promotion was the main narrative during the 2023/24 season, there is no doubt that the quest to stay in the division was also a rather entertaining subplot across the campaign.

At one stage it looked as if as many as 10 clubs could be in a precarious position when it came to facing the drop. Of those 10, Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth found themselves looking nervously over their shoulders.

However, both the Owls and Pilgrims would earn the necessary points to keep themselves out of trouble and more importantly, within the Championship class of 2024/25. The former finishing 20th and two places clear of relegation, the latter a single place worse off in 21st.

As close to the drop zone as you can be without being dropped yourself and with Wednesday manager Danny Rohl taking the reins at Hillsborough last October, the installation of the German was already seen as a last roll of the Championship dice.

When Rohl took over, the blue and white half of Wednesday were cast adrift at the bottom with just three points from the first 33 on offer. Little by little, progress was made under the watchful eye of the German, progress that gave Wednesday the confidence to eventually stay in the division.

While if we are to stay on the topic on confidence, there is no doubt that Wayne Rooney would have seen his dented after a disastrous spell as boss of Birmingham. When the former England international was installed, the second city club found themselves in the Championship playoffs.

Fast forward just 15 games later and the Manchester United and Everton legend would go on to not only lose nine of them, but also lose his status as Birmingham manager – a woeful run that would play a significant part in their eventual end of season demotion to League One.

Now though, England’s second highest all-time scorer has a shot at redemption. Redemption that is found in Plymouth and considering how things ended up at Birmingham, maybe his last genuine shot at high profile management.

When you look at Rooney’s managerial resume, there are arguably more busts than successes and although it is undoubtedly a distinguished name that the Plymouth board have installed, it is also a brand that is somewhat tainted in terms of managerial nous.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I think Rooney redemption begins as soon as the weekend. A new era for Plymouth and one that begins with an impressive away win at an impressive price of 7/2.

In addition to this, I think this is going to be a game of few chances. So few, that a single goal will make the difference for Plymouth. Therefore, the correct score pick of 1-0 to the Pilgrims is also worth heavy consideration at odds of 11/1.
