Pakistan v England Match Preview
This England team are by no means perfect, but crikey they’re fun to watch.
Yes, Pakistan won’t be the toughest of opponents, but winning any Test Match having conceded 556 in the first innings is a remarkable achievement.
Harry Brook with 317 and Joe Root with 262 took all the headlines, but the supporting cast were excellent too. Jack Leach did his bit with the ball, taking seven wickets, and I was impressed with pacy Brydon Carse’s impact on debut with two wickets in each innings.
There was criticism of the placid nature of the Multan pitch, which did show signs of uneven bounce late on. And it seems they’re going to play on the same surface, which should spin more this time.
The visitors have brought Ben Stokes back into the side as captain following his return to fitness after a hamstring injury, with Chris Woakes the fall guy despite a disciplined performance.
Instead of taking the 41/50 on offer for an outright England win, I like William Hill’s #YourOdds selection of an England win and spinner Jack Leach to be their clear top wicket-taker in the first innings at 4/1.
Spin it to win it
I suggested Jack Leach as England’s leading series wicket-taker before a ball was bowled, and seven wickets in the first Test was an encouraging start for the popular left-armer.
He out-bowled his Somerset team-mate, the off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, by a distance, and I won’t be diverting away from Leach.
Such is my confidence in Leach, who ended the county season with Somerset in red hot form, he actually features in two of my remaining four bets in this cricket betting tips preview.
The first is him to take three wickets in the first innings, something which betway have available at 23/20 in their Player Props section.
Paddy Power’s 16/5 on Joe Root to be England’s top first-innings scorer is a price which I’d be interested in as well.
Given their performances in the first Test, it would be understandable to view this market as a shootout between Root and Harry Brook.
And I actually believe that, despite everything Root has achieved, that Brook is a better, more rounded player.
But Root is undoubtedly a better player against spin. For that reason, I would be siding with him on this occasion.
It surprises me that Pakistan captain Shan Masood, who scored 151 in the first innings of the opening Test, is available at 11/2 with William Hill to be his side’s top batter in the first innings of the second Test. He may be struggling as captain, but he is a quality performer with the bat.
At that price, I’d be siding with the left-handed number three.
Right, back to Leach and Root to finish.
Betfair are offering a juicy 15/1 double on Root to be England’s top batter in the first innings and Leach to be their top first-innings bowler.
