    • Hibs to win to nil
    • Motherwell -3
    • Aberdeen to win
    • Over 2.5 goals in Falkirk v Dundee Utd

The Scottish League Cup will kick off the return of domestic club football ahead of the new season, with 16 matches taking place on Saturday.

Hibs, Aberdeen, Motherwell and Dundee United are among the Scottish Premiership teams in action in a group stage that usually amounts to a form of glorified pre-season over the next few weeks.

Scottish League Cup Acca

Elgin v Hibs

Hibs to win to nil

Hibs will be out to make amends across all competitions this season, having seen the back of two managers last season despite reaching the semi-finals of the League Cup. Lee Johnson and Nick Montgomery were the men to depart, leaving David Gray to take control as the Hibees finished the season in eighth, but with more points than sixth-placed Dundee following the split.

There has predictably been some turnover of players but they have started pre-season well with a win over Greek champions PAOK, so they will be full of confidence making the long trip to Elgin and looking for a statement start to the season, even if it is against minnows Elgin City. The League Two hosts have a poor record in this competition and I think it will be a case of how many Hibs win by, rather than whether or not they get off to a winning start.

With 13 defeats from their last 14 matches for Elgin, a win to nil for Hibs seems a pretty safe bet.

Queen of the South v Aberdeen

Aberdeen to win

Last year’s League Cup runners-up, Aberdeen, enter this year’s tournament at the slightly earlier stage of the groups this year owing to their seventh-place finish in the Scottish Premiership, and they might not have it all their own way in what could prove to be a tricky opener this time round.

Yes they will still be expected to come away with the win, but of all the ties they could have faced first up this is the one that has the potential for a banana skin.

Things appear to be a bit more settled for the Dons after the chaos of the Neil Warnock reign, with Jimmy Thelin taking charge in June having been announced in April and the form towards the end of the season points to better things to come. Queen of the South also have a new manager with Peter Murphy at the helm and they fared okay in last season’s competition, finishing second in their group to Motherwell.

Expect Aberdeen to have enough to get through this game but I wouldn’t be totally surprised to see them concede.

Falkirk v Dundee United

Over 2.5 goals in Falkirk v Dundee Utd

This must surely be the tie of the round, with Falkirk coasting through the League One season unbeaten last year to earn promotion after years of near misses and Dundee United back in the Premiership at the first time of trying.

Both teams came first in their respective divisions - League One and the Championship - and have every reason to be full of confidence heading into this season. Falkirk in particular will fancy their chances this year, not only in the league but also in the League Cup, where they can give Dundee United a run for their money with a positive result here.

I think the confidence from last season will carry over into this game and there could be a few goals, but I think it is quite a tough one to call in terms of results so I am going to stick with over 2.5 goals.

Motherwell v Edinburgh City

Motherwell -3

It is quite hard to know what to expect from this game, with a lot of background noise surrounding the ownership of both clubs. Motherwell are subject to interest from the US - which hasn’t necessarily gone down too well - while Edinburgh City were deducted six points for their financial position last season, and saw 20 senior players depart the club mid-season due to a lack of cash.

They have had a remarkable turnover of players this summer with 15 free transfers coming in as they look to improve on a dismal campaign that saw them concede 98 goals over the course of the season.

The fact that Motherwell didn’t exactly have their best campaign doesn’t factor into our tip for this game. They will beat Edinburgh pretty easily and I think they will put a few goals past them while they’re at it, with home advantage another factor against one of the weaker sides in this year’s League Cup.
