Scotland v Poland Match Preview

No sooner has the new season started, than another international break is upon us. Admittedly, it is not one that is as welcomed as the end of season major tournament windows, but it still gives a first chances for national teams to get down to business for the latest campaign.

September’s European pause means a return to the Nations League and with Scotland earning promotion to League A, Steve Clarke’s men have now reached the summit of UEFA’s fledging competition.

Not only is it a chance to play at the highest level of the Nations League but it is also an opportunity to put the woes of Germany behind them. The Tartan Army were battered and bruised after the exploits in the European Championships – exploits that they will want to forget.

Because for all the partying that was done in the streets and bars of the three host venues that welcomed a legion of Scottish fans, the football under manager Steve Clarke was rather sobering to watch.

Destroyed by Germany, humbled by Hungary and sent packing back to Scotland at the first opportunity once again. Now, the remit will be first to qualify for the World Cup in North America, but also hold their own in League A of this competition.

A four-team mini league sees Scotland placed with Thursday’s opponents Poland, Croatia and Portugal. Not an easy set of opponents to deal with but if you want to be at the highest tier of Nations League action, this is the level you have to go up against.

A level that Poland maintained after finishing third in their League A group two seasons ago. Back then, there was no jeopardy connected to that position. Now though, finishing third places you in a relegation playoff.

With a slight tweak in format, every position offers some form of prize or punishment going forward. Finish in the top two and you move on to the subsequent quarter-final stage of the league you are in.

Anything less than that and there is some form of relegation peril hanging over you – be it either automatic or a playoff to stay up and with both Scotland and Poland looking to avoid either, they will also be looking to avoid defeat on Thursday.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with both teams having European Championship campaigns to forget, there is little to split the two teams. Therefore, I am going to back the draw at odds of 21/10.

In addition to this, I am going to take a trip to the corner market and with goals likely to be at a premium, that should narrow down the number of total corners taken. You can get 8/1 on exactly six corners being taken between the two teams and this is also going onto the betting slip.
