Revealed: What officials said to Mikel Arteta after Bukayo Saka denied penalty vs Bayern Munich

Arsenal faced off with Bayern Munich in the first of two Champions League quarter-final ties on Tuesday evening.

The Gunners went 1-0 up at the Emirates but were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw when the final whistle blew. Arsenal now travel to Germany for the reverse leg on April 17 and are 8/5 to pick up the win with bet365.

What officials said after Arsenal denied penalty vs Bayern Munich

Arsenal took the lead after 12 minutes on Tuesday via Bukayo Saka. However, their advantage did not last long, with goals from Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane in the 18th and 32nd minute putting Bayern in the driver’s seat.

Leandro Trossard then came off the bench in the second half to put the home side back on level terms with 12 minutes of normal time to play.

The north Londoners then thought they had been gifted a chance to win the match in the final seconds of second-half stoppage time when Bukayo Saka went down inside the box following a very risky-looking challenge from Bayern captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

But the referee waved away the calls and blew the final whistle moments after the challenge. Asked what the referee said to him following the final whistle, Mikel Arteta told TNT Sports: “(The referee) didn’t say anything. They said they checked it and they decided it wasn’t a penalty.”

Leandro Trossard, also speaking post-match, backed up Saka by claiming it was a penalty:

“On the pitch, it looked like a penalty to me,” he said. “I haven’t seen the replay, but for me it looked like it was clear contact. But I have to wait until after to see it again obviously.”
