Republic of Ireland v England Match Preview

The memories of Germany have just about faded away as far as the Three Lions are concerned and soon the tenure of Gareth Southgate as manager will be forgotten. Not because it was underwhelming or anything like that, more the simple reason that football always moves on.

It always moves on and it always moves on at quite a pace and with the Nations League demanding an international break just a month into the new season, a new era of the England national team begins.

A new era but whether it is a permanent era depends on a couple of factors. The first of those is how well Lee Carsley does while taking on the job in an interim capacity, the second is whether the FA can find a full time successor for Southgate.

In making the interim appointment of Carsley, there is no doubt that the FA have brought themselves some time. How much time depends on how someone such as Eddie Howe does with Newcastle in the next few weeks.

If Newcastle say that’s Howe for now and decide on a managerial change of their own, the former Bournemouth boss would quickly become the number one candidate for the post. Should the Magpies fly towards the top four of the table, other options may have to be explored.

While Carsley himself will have to explore new options when he and his squad make a short trip over the Irish Sea. Saturday sees them face Ireland and at the Aviva Stadium and they do so without a raft of key names.

With Jude Bellingham and Luke Shaw already ruled out before the squad was named, the duo are now joined by the trio of Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Ollie Watkins when it comes to not being available due to injury.

A number of absences, a number of new names looking to be involved and with talents such as Morgan Gibbs-White and Tino Livramento being called up Carsley, they may be in line to get some debut minutes under their belt.

Also making a debut from an Irish point of view is a new manager of their own – one that is permanent after the FAI took a lengthy amount of time in finding the right man. The man is Heimir Hallgrimsson, and the 57-year-old now takes over from former boss Stephen Kenny.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with England looking to get out of League B in the Nations League, even a slightly depleted squad should get off to winning ways. Therefore, I am going to back the away win and a Bukayo Saka goal to go with it at odds of 15/4.

In addition to this, I am also going to opt for a correct score. There is no doubt the Aviva Stadium crowd will look to roar on the home side, and I think this helps them breach England’s defence. However, it will not be enough as I am also backing a 2-1 away win at odds of 8/1.
