Preston v Sheffield United Match Preview

Even though the European Championships ended less a month ago, a new English season begins at the weekend and although the events in Germany will not have a direct effect on England’s second tier, it does highlight how little rest there is for players these days.

However, rest or not, there is no doubt that those involved within tiers two to four will be itching to get their campaigns underway and with Preston and Sheffield United being handed the task of kickstarting the Championship on Friday, both will look to kickstart their campaign with a win.

Hosts Preston will open their Deepdale doors knowing that their defence was far too open last season. Ryan Lowe’s men started the campaign brightly and at one stage even looked like an early play-off contender.

However, as the likes of Leicester and Ipswich romped clear into the distance, this Preston side only slid down the table and especially when the campaign reached the business end of proceedings.

An eventual 10th-place finish but punctuated by five successive league defeats at the end of the season. With only 10 points separating Norwich in sixth and where Lowe’s men ended up, who knows if better end-of-season form would have matched many people’s early expectations.

Now though, everyone starts on zero once again and when you consider leaky defences across 2023/24, Sheffield United will be delighted their tally has been reset after making unwanted Premier League history.

The Blades were certainly blunted before the summer break and with Chris Wilder’s return to Bramall Lane offering nothing in the way of new manager bounce, it would also eventually lead to his team conceding a total of 104 goals by the time their nightmare top-tier return had ended.

Admittedly, it was not all down to the watchful eye of Wilder, with predecessor Paul Heckingbottom also being complicit in this eye-watering deficit being racked up. Then again, regardless of the manager, it is the players who were most complicit of all.

Players who looked largely out of their depth when mixing it with the likes of Manchester City or Liverpool but also a large swathe of those players have been moved on. A new era for the club begins on Friday and this new era will look to celebrate another promotion in nine months.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with both outfits keen to impress on the opening night. I think it is Sheffield United that will impress the most. The Blades are 3/1 with bet365 to win this game by a one-goal margin, I think that is a great starting point for this brand-new season.

In addition to this, I am going to back Sheffield United new boy Kieffer Moore to use his head to good effect. The Welsh international is known for his aerial threat and you can back the former Bournemouth man to score a header and odds of 9/1 again with bet365.
