Portsmouth v Sunderland Match Preview

Sunderland have begun their 2024-25 campaign with three straight wins to nil, putting two past Cardiff, four past Sheffield Wednesday – who had themselves just thumped Plymouth Argyle - and one past promotion favourites Burnley.

The latter was especially impressive, not just because of the opposition, but also because of the sale of star winger Jack Clarke to Ipswich in the week leading up to it.

Fear not, though, because Romaine Mundle stepped up admirably, producing a firm, tight-angled finish as well as being a key creative outlet on the left – almost as if Clarke never went away.

Sunderland have always had a collection of prodigiously talented individuals in goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, right-back Trai Hume, midfielders Dan Neil (although he’s suspended for this one) and Jobe Bellingham, plus Patrick Roberts out wide.

Plus, now 17-year-old Chris Rigg comes very much into that category and is starting in midfield ahead of their big summer signing, Championship-proven Alan Browne.

The difference is, now the standard of coaching means there’s an aggressive, well co-ordinated pressing structure that allows that talent to flourish.

And flourish, they may, at Portsmouth, where John Mousinho’s side have begun with three consecutive draws, a respectable return considering they’ve gone to Elland Road, hosted parachute payees in Luton, and then gone to a Middlesbrough side with plenty quality.

Pompey have also been fortunate to attain those results, scoring five goals with an xGF of 3.28, and conceding five with an xGA of 7.74 – they might not quite get the rub of the green this time around.
