Portsmouth v Luton Betting Tips, Odds & Match Preview - Championship Betting Tips

Despite a midweek loss in the EFL Cup, there is plenty for Portsmouth fans to be optimistic about after a thrilling performance in last week’s surprise 3-3 draw at Elland Road to kick-start their Championship return.

There is a sense of cautious optimism around Fratton Park this season after last year’s promotion, while much is still expected of Saturday’s opponents Luton despite their heavy defeat to Burnley on Monday night.

I’ve reviewed the best football betting offers, odds, and markets from our selection of top football betting sites to bring you free betting tips for Portsmouth v Luton.

Portsmouth v Luton Match Preview

It was something of a rude awakening for Luton on their own return to the second tier, having faced fellow-relegated side Burnley on Monday night and come out on the wrong end of a 4-1 battering.

While the Hatters weren’t exactly tipped to cruise through the league and go straight back up, they are expected to be pretty strong this year after coping well with the Premier League last term and that opening defeat will have been an early blow to them.

There hasn’t been a lot of turnover in the Luton squad so they should be pretty stable this season, but it would be quite understandable if the players were to suffer from a slight hangover from last season before putting a run of form together.

Things don’t necessarily get any easier this weekend as they travel to Fratton Park for the first Championship home game Portsmouth have played in 12 years.

I think it will be a trip a lot of sides struggle with this season, and while Portsmouth might not quite match Ipswich’s miracles of last season I think the positive energy around the club and atmosphere from the support as a result of their promotion could carry them a long way.

It is still very early in the season to be drawing any conclusions from what we have seen - particularly with the transfer window still open and busy - but Luton will be tough to break down and I think Portsmouth would happily settle for a point to make it two in two against two of the promotion favourites.

I do expect both teams to score however, so I’m going to combine those two markets and offer a score draw as my first tip, which you can find at 7/2 with BetVictor.

If there’s one thing to take from Portsmouth’s first game against Leeds, it’s that they have goals in them but also they are prone to a yellow card or four.

Having picked up 104 yellows over the course of last season, they clearly are a pretty physical side so I am tempted to look at a yellow card/goal double for this game, and I’m looking at Callum Lang to complete that.

The forward played 12 games for Pompey last season, scoring four goals and picking up three cards. Already this season he has two goals and one yellow, so for him to do that again this week you can get Lang at 33/2 with BetMGM to be booked and score a goal.
