Northern Ireland v Bulgaria Match Preview
If there is one continual criticism of the Northern Irish national football team, it must be their lack of genuine flair and although there is never any doubt regarding the fight displayed by the green and white, that fight rarely is converted into a necessary number of goals.
A scenario that once again played out at the weekend and after contesting a bore draw with Belarus, the fact that it was played behind closed doors probably did a favour to both sets of supporters.
Hungary playing the role of hosts and although both teams were hungry for goals on Saturday, what little endeavour that was on offer from either outfit was not enough to break the opposition defence into a cold sweat.
Now though, Northern Ireland will be sweating at the failure to return to winning ways in this latest Nations League cycle and after an opening fixture win over Luxembourg in September, that 2-0 win was then followed up by a 1-0 defeat to Bulgaria in Plovdiv just days later.
Therefore, Michael O’Neill’s panel of players currently have four points to their name before they host Bulgaria on Tuesday and with their opponents just a point better off at the top of the group, the outcome at Windsor Park may help define what happens in Group 3 of League C.
A point separating the two sides but also a point between Belarus and Northern Ireland and just as either of these two sides could eventually be competing in a promotion playoff after finishing second, they could just as easily be securing an automatic berth at the expense of Bulgaria.
As for Bulgaria themselves, they arrive in Belfast with a Nations League record that does very little to get the pulses racing. They may be unbeaten in their first three outings; but they have scored a single goal in the process.
However, Ilian Iliev’s men also arrive in Belfast having kept three successive clean sheets – a streak that was extended on Saturday when Bulgaria and Luxembourg also served up a bore draw between them.
This means that just four goals in total have been scored across the six group games thus far and if you are looking for entertainment during the international break, you may be tempted to look elsewhere.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and because of the low-scoring nature of this group and little difference between the two teams in terms of output, I am going to back the draw and under 2.5 goals at odds of 4/1 with William Hill.
In addition to this, I am going to opt for the corner market for my second tip. A lack of goals does not necessarily mean a lack of chances and therefore, I am going to back exactly 11 corners at odds of 9/1 with bet365.
