Northampton might feel hard done by to have lost in injury-time on the opening day at Bristol Rovers, but in truth they hadn’t created enough at the Mem to earn a point.
And, having mustered just two shots on target across that match, and the 2-0 midweek EFL Cup defeat to Wycombe, there can be some concerns over whether the Cobblers are due a drop-off, following the losses of key men in Sam Sherring, Marc Leonard and Kieron Bowie.
Exeter, meanwhile, began with a 1-0 victory over a much-fancied Rotherham side, with defenders Tristan Crama and Johnly Vfecko enjoying excellent debuts for Gary Caldwell’s side.
Plus, centre-forward Josh Magennis represents the experienced, proven focal point that City didn’t have last year, and while it’s still early days, there’s a chance they’re picking up from their sumptuous spring form.
