Next Norwich Manager Odds: Latest Betting after Thorup Sacked

Updated: April 22, 2025 at 4:09 pm GMT+1

Norwich sacked manager Johannes Hoff Thorup on Tuesday morning after a run of four defeats in five matches that has seen them drop out of Championship play-off contention.

The Canaries lost in the semi-finals to Leeds last season but despite a promising start this year under Thorup, they have fallen away quickly and currently sit 14th, just seven points clear of the bottom three.

Jack Wilshere has been announced as interim manager until the end of the season - meaning he will take charge opposite former teammate Aaron Ramsey when Norwich face Cardiff on the final day of the campaign.

Russell Martin was the early favourite with online betting sites to replace Thorup on a full-time basis, and we've had a look at the others in the running.

There is plenty of competition for managers at the moment with West Brom also sacking their manager, Tony Mowbray, over the weekend.

Russell Martin

After taking Southampton up last season - before a disastrous spell in the Premier League which ended in his dismissal in December - Martin will surely be highly sought-after this summer.

He has one promotion on his CV, plays the modern style of football that is deemed to be desirable and won't be given a Premier League job given his troubles this season - so he looks like the perfect appointment for a side just outside the play-offs hoping to push on.

And even despite their troubles this year, Norwich are likely to be in the Championship betting for promotion next season, so it should appeal to him.

Where Norwich have the advantage is that Martin is a former club captain who made 309 appearances over a nine-year association with the Canaries - so surely it is inevitable that he returns as a manager this time?

Martin has a point to prove, and Norwich would appear to be ideally placed for him to rebuild his reputation.

Gary O'Neil

The former Wolves manager is another who has a connection to Norwich from his playing days, so it's no surprise to see him linked to the job in the football betting markets.

He has a good reputation as a young coach having done very respectable jobs at Bournemouth and most recently Wolves in the Premier League, and could wait it out for a top flight job next season if a relegation-threatened club makes a change mid-season.

But if he fancies a bit more of a project, Norwich could appeal to him and he should fit in pretty well with the structure currently in place at the club.

With the West Brom job also available you could easily see them making a play for O'Neil, but could that link from his playing days prove decisive? Norwich fans will be hoping so, because you would think he would be something of a coup for them given how their season has fallen away.

Jack Wilshere

Wilshere has been named interim manager until the end of the season, completing an impressive career path for the former England international.

Still just 33, Wilshere came onboard at Norwich at the start of the season with Thorup but has clearly impressed enough to be kept on while the rest of the backroom staff departs with the former manager.

He only has two games to make an impression so a full-time appointment would still seem unlikely, but it does have a certain romance to it - as does a potential game against Aaron Ramsey's Cardiff on the final game of the season.

Most fans will remember the baby-faced Wilshere that broke onto the scene in the Champions League against Barcelona while still a teenager, so seeing him in charge of a Championship club is slightly surreal but it is heartening to see a talented footballer forced to retire early due to injury work his way back to the top of the game - albeit on the other side of the touchline.

It looks like being a manager will certainly be the next step in Wilshere's career, but you would feel that it might be slightly too soon to be given such a role - especially with the calibre of managers also available.

Steve Cooper

You'd have to think Cooper is another manager who Norwich fans won't mind one bit that they're being linked to, but in Cooper's case there will probably be a bit more of a split.

He has a lot of recent Premier League experience, and if anything his reputation has probably increased since his dismissal by Leicester earlier this season - the Foxes have been dismal ever since.

He has a reputation for adopting a fairly basic style of play - he was criticised for this at Nottingham Forest at times and at Leicester - but showed at Swansea that he can be flexible, so fans probably shouldn't make too many assumptions just yet.

I think Cooper might fancy waiting for another Premier League role to come up. It's not too hard to imagine Daniel Farke or Scott Parker getting the boot early next season and Cooper being parachuted in, so would he drop down to the Championship at this stage?

Sean Dyche

For some reason, Dyche feels quite Norwich and it's a bit of a surprise that he never had a brief spell with them in his playing career.

So it's not hard to imagine him in the dugout at Carrow Road, and given his record most recently with Burnley and Everton you would think the Canaries would bend over backwards to have him lead them.

He's another though that is probably entitled to feel like he deserves another crack in the Premier League but might find it harder and harder to get the jobs he wants due to his management style.

You would think he would be the ideal firefighter for struggling sides in the Premier League, but if he wants a bit more of a project and a bit of a reinvention, then a move down to the Championship might be a good move.

At this stage he has fairly long odds and it's no surprise, so don't be surprised if he continues to drift.
