Monaco v Aston Villa Match Preview
Aston Villa face a crunch test as they travel to take on Monaco in their penultimate Champions League phase game on Tuesday evening.
Going into Matchday 7, Villa are in a healthy position in the standings, sitting in fifth spot with 13 points garnered.
A victory would all but secure a Round of 16 berth with just Celtic to play after as the top eight, remember, advance automatically.
Monaco, on the other hand, are currently poised to qualify for the knockout playoff round as one of the seeded teams (10th), but in their previous European outing against Arsenal, they were swept aside in a 3-0 defeat.
The Ligue 1 outfit are sweating on the fitness of Wilfried Singo and Denis Zakaria who were both left out of the matchday squad against Montpellier where they crashed to a 2-1 loss.
Unai Emery has an excellent personal record against Monaco, whom he won each of his past six games against them while in charge of PSG with an aggregate scoreline of 23-4.
But will that continue? I’ve supplied a couple of betting tips to underline my Monaco v Aston Villa predictions.
Aston Villa to dig deep into the trenches to secure win
Against Arsenal last weekend in the Premier League, Villa looked to be down and out.
However, Emery’s men showed the type of mental resilience required when the chips seemed to be down to dig themselves out of a hole and rescue an unlikely point after staging a dramatic comeback through goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins.
Against Monaco, Villa will need to show the same kind of fighting spirit, and this will be the first European meeting between both sides.
Monaco, however, boasts a strong record at home against English opposition, winning four of the past five clashes, and they have been against different teams — Chelsea and Liverpool (both 2004), Tottenham in 2016, and Manchester City in 2017.
Let’s not forget that Villa are winless in their past four away matches against French teams (D2, L2), with the most recent encounter coming last season against Lille in the UEFA Conference League.
There is plenty at stake for both sides, and Villa can almost smell the Round of 16 stage. I’m backing Villa to pull through, but they will be made to work hard for the win. The simple 1x2 line and Villa to prevail in 90 minutes has odds of 9/5 tagged onto it at Paddy Power.
Villa fans to go through an emotional rollercoaster
This is almost uncharted territory given Villa’s absence at the top table in Europe for so long now.
Nevertheless, they have provided value for money in the competition this term, and the likes of Jhon Duran have come to the fore, netting three times from six appearances.
Although Monaco started their Champions League campaign well as they were unbeaten in their first four games, the wheels have come off a bit with back-to-back defeats against Benfica (2-3) and Arsenal (0-3).
They’ve never previously conceded three or more goals in three consecutive matches in the Champions League or European Cup, and they will be desperate to avoid that.
But Villa have been formidable on the road with only Atalanta and Liverpool (both nine), and Feyenoord (seven), picking up more points on their continental travels.
I think it will be a topsy-turvy game, and one where Villa fans could be put through the wringer. After backing Villa to win, I’m going to wrap up my Monaco Aston Villa predictions by tipping the away side to prevail and there to be five or more goals in the match which is trading at 10/1 with William Hill.
