MK Dons v Carlisle Match Preview

MK Dons haven’t had the start to the season they wanted, losing 2-1 and 2-0 at home to Bradford and away to Colchester respectively.

Those defeats speak to a defence that’s still coming together because, in a bid to fix last season’s big-game leakages, there’s been an overhaul of personnel with four new players in the starting XI across goalkeeping, defensive and sitting midfield units – it takes time for them to forge an understanding.

However, Mike Williamson’s side have created enough chances in both games to have won at least one of them: they’re underperforming their xGF (For) of 2.37 by 1.37 (because they’ve only scored once), and their xGA (Against) of 1.89 by 1.11 (they’ve conceded three times).

So, the numbers suggest they’re not far off their first win if they can iron out some of those errors, benefiting from the agile, quick-minded creativity of the diminutive Liam Kelly in midfield.

Carlisle got their first points of the season last weekend, beating Barrow 1-0 in the “we wouldn’t call it a derby if you actually asked us, but we dislike them too much for the clash not to represent a rivalry of some description” derby, thanks to Dan Adu-Adjei’s first half winner.

Paul Simpson’s side can be defensively vulnerable, though, as we saw in the second half of their 4-1 thumping by Gillingham.
