Manchester United v Liverpool Match Preview

With Manchester City gatecrashing the race for supremacy within the North West of English football, the pair of Manchester United and Liverpool have found themselves with a new enemy over the past decade or so.

However, that does mean that United and Liverpool are a combined force looking to topple the Etihad outfit once and for all, instead they still have enough contempt for each other and this what makes any clash between the Old Trafford and Anfield outfits so enthralling.

This time around it is the Theatre of Dreams that will be under Sunday’s spotlight and after United lost at Brighton last weekend in the final few seconds of the game, the Red Devils’ performance against the Reds will also be ready for scrutiny.

In fairness, that scrutiny comes regardless of whether United win or lose but there is no doubt the post-mortem will be far more brutal if manager ten Hag oversees defeat for the second Premier League weekend in a row.

Last Saturday it looked as if United would return from The Amex with a point for their troubles. Amad’s strike deflected home in the second half and in doing so, cancelling out an opener from former Red Devil Danny Welbeck.

As always, the devil is in the detail and the devil in East Sussex was their defending late on. Joao Pedro in acres of space as he headed home for the hosts and in doing so, made sure that it was Brighton who made it two wins from two.

The same return that Liverpool have managed under new manager Arne Slot and although the first 45 minutes of his tenure was rather sedate, the following 135 have been much closer to being labelled as sumptuous.

New manager, relatively the same principles and subsequently, Liverpool have created some enticing passages of play against both Ipswich and Brentford and both times, the Merseyside men have run out 2-0 winners.

Comfortable wins but expected wins at the same time and with the fixture computer being rather kind in terms of Slot’s integration into Premier League life, Sunday’s trip to Manchester looks set to be a true litmus test of his and his players current abilities.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with Manchester United’s frailties at both end of the field still apparent, I am backing Liverpool to not only win this but also keep a clean sheet. Therefore, the away win to nil is priced at 3/1.

In addition to this, Liverpool will look to give minutes to their new signing Federico Chiesa and with the Italian looking to endear himself to new support as soon possible, I am backing him to score the last goal of the game at odds of 15/2.
