Manchester United v Fulham Match Preview

When Alejandro Garnacho scored late on in last Saturday’s FA Community Shield, it looked as if Manchester United were going to record a quickfire double over their nearest and noisiest rivals Manchester City.

However, an even later equaliser from City’s Bernardo Silva meant that parity was restored in the nick of time and with the lottery of a penalty shootout then coming into play, it was Pep Guardiola’s men who would find themselves in possession of the winning ticket.

Frustration for Erik ten Hag and his players as they missed out on another successful day out at Wembley but at the same time, success in the Premier League curtain raiser only really matters if you win, nobody remembers or cares if you fail to take the shield back on the team coach.

Then again, fans of the Red Devils will certainly remember and also care if their club do not get their new league campaign off to a perfect start and with the Theatre of Dreams being given top billing on Friday night, opponents Fulham will look to hand out a nightmare to their hosts.

The Cottagers finished 13th in last season’s edition of the Premier League and considering they did this without the services of then talisman Alexsander Mitrovic, it could be considered a job well done by those who wear the white colours of West London.

If they are to match that same position or better, the job well done is going to be a job that is slightly more difficult to complete. The reason being the sale of Joao Palhinha in the summer, as the midfielder swaps London for Munich.

The Portuguese international now plying his trade under Vincent Kompany at Bayern, but there is new company to be added to the network of former Gunners that have ended up on the banks of the River Thames.

Joining the likes of Bernd Leno and Alex Iwobi at Craven Cottage is none other than Emile Smith Rowe and with the 24-year-old struggling to get minutes at the Emirates under Mikel Arteta, he instead becomes Marco Silva’s highest-profile capture of the summer.

Of course, Manchester United are never short of high-profile signings and in a similar vein, their Ajax old boys club has been extended to a further two members with the recent arrivals of defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with no form to go on, it is gut feel that is going to have to do the heavy lifting on Friday. My gut suggests that the hosts will win both halves at Old Trafford and you can back this outcome at odds of 3/1 with betfair.

In addition to this, United’s new look defence may take time to be watertight and therefore, I can see Fulham scoring on Friday. However, it will not be enough to disrupt the hosts, and this also means I am backing a home win by two goals to one – an outcome priced at 8/1 with bet365.
