After eight hugely successful seasons in charge of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola begins what is expected to be his final pre-season with the club as they take on Scottish Premiership champions Celtic in Chicago.

With his contract due to expire at the end of the new season, Guardiola is expected to leave the Etihad - and he could be England-bound - but not before having another crack and glory with City, who face AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea in the coming weeks before the Community Shield on August 10.

Celtic meanwhile have already been in action, overcoming Queen’s Park and DC United impressively after a drab draw with Ayr to kick things off, and Brendan Rodgers will be looking to push an under-strength City side close.

Man City v Celtic Match Preview

Manchester City travel to the USA with something of a depleted squad - or as depleted a squad as anyone with their resources can claim to have - after seeing 15 of their players compete across the two major international tournaments this summer, Euro 2024 and Copa America.

First-choice players such as Phil Foden, Rodri, John Stones, Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva will all miss the USA tour, along with Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake, Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku, while Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol will join up at a later date and Joao Cancelo is also due to return to the club after a spell away on loan.

Julian Alvarez will be competing for Argentina in the Olympics so is another absentee.

One bonus for fans in Chicago will be the presence of Erling Haaland after a summer off, while Kalvin Phillips and Jack Grealish both have points to prove to Guardiola and others.

Celtic should be a little bit more battle-hardened by this stage of pre-season having already kicked off their preparations, and with just under two weeks to go until their first Scottish Premiership fixture - home to Kilmarnock on Sunday 4 August - Brendan Rodgers is putting together the final pieces of the jigsaw.

The future of Matt O’Riley remains up in the air but he is still a key part of the Celtic side and much of their success this season could come down to his influence but this game could come at a good time for Scotland internationals such as Callum McGregor, James Forrest, Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston.

City to be caught cold?

Well, I don’t expect City to be caught completely cold, but I think Celtic will cause them more problems than they would do at any other stage of the season.

The respective stages of pre-season is one factor, but we’re expecting to see quite a weak City side littered with top-class attacking talents - though Ederson will be a welcome presence in goal. I can see Celtic scoring for sure, but with the likes of Haaland, Oscar Bobb and Grealish in the side they should have enough going forward to get under way with a win.

I quite fancy this game to finish 3-1 to Man City with both teams on the scoresheet but not enough between the sides for them to run away with it.
