Lincoln v Birmingham Match Preview
Six of the nine league goals Birmingham have conceded this season have come in the first half, three of them in the opening quarter of an hour.
In fact, if games finished at half-time, Blues would be as low as 13th: instead they’re threatening to run away with the title, because of their second half dominance.
When Chris Davies’ side play out from the back, it can encourage high-energy opponents like Reading, Leyton Orient, Peterborough, Huddersfield and Charlton to go and press them aggressively from the outset.
When opponents do that, it can expose some nerves in the goalkeeping department, where neither Bailey Peacock-Farrell nor Ryan Allsop have covered themselves in glory thus far.
Lincoln City are arguably the best pressing side in the league, and they will feel the running power of Jovon Makama and Freddie Draper can give them some joy early on against the visitors, who will be without defender Krystian Bielik and perhaps one or two other key players.
Midfielder Tomoki Iwata is also expected to miss out for Birmingham, Jay Stansfield was absent from England Under-21s duty with a knock, while Paik Seung-Ho will be a late returnee from his international commitments with South Korea.
As such, the Imps will feel they have a chance of pulling off a surprise result at Sincil Bank.
Birmingham, though, are well-placed to cope with absentees with an embarrassment of riches, and have had the means this season to change games that aren’t going their way.
For instance, replacing Iwata would be Marc Leonard who, for his cultured playmaking in midfield for Northampton last season, made League One’s Team of the Year.
Blues should have the better of the second half, once they find their rhythm.
