Iceland v Wales Match Preview
Although the main focus being placed on the UEFA Nations League B is Group 2 – the group that England find themselves in, Welsh interest instead finds itself far more interested in what is going on in Group 4.
A group that continues a Wales side that now sees Craig Bellamy at the managerial helm and although he has no club experience from a head coach or manager point of view, that does not seem to be holding him back in any way.
His first showing as manager of the Welsh national team saw his new charges offer plenty of positives in September’s 0-0 draw at home to Turkiye and that positive feeling would be enhanced only a few days later.
The reason for this was a professional performance in Montenegro and one that saw Bellamy’s men earn a 2-1 win in Niksic. Early goals Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson would put the visitors 2-0 up within the first three minutes of the game.
A two-goal advantage that certainly gave Wales an element of stability on their travels and although Driton Camaj would halve the deficit on the night with just over 15 minutes of the game remaining, Wales’ defence was then equal to anything thrown at them late on.
Holding out for a first win under the watchful eye of the former Burnley assistant manager and now that this new chapter of the Welsh footballing story has tasted that winning feeling, they will want more of it after a trip to Iceland.
A trip that sees their Icelandic hosts looking to return to winning ways after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Turkiye in Izmir and as a consequence, that defeat sees Age Hareide and his players currently sit third in this four team mini-league.
They do so because of their own win against Montenegro days before their first loss of the campaign and with every position in the table mattering to some degree, it also means that every performance matters.
No dead rubbers at this stage and this is what Wales will have to be wary of when they travel to the Iceland capital of Reykjavik. A victory would strengthen their promotion hopes, but defeat will have them looking over their shoulders before Monday’s return meeting with Montenegro.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I am going to back Wales to make it two successive wins in the Nations League and they will do so by also keeping a clean sheet. The away win and both teams not to score is priced at 16/5 with Midnite.
In addition to this, I am going to back Harry Wilson to get on the scoresheet for the second international outing in a row and to make things even more interesting, I am backing him to score outside the box at odds of 11/1 with bet365.
