Hibernian v Celtic Match Preview

If there is one piece of advice to give any manager of Hibernian – it is do not settle into a permanent residence. No sooner is one candidate installed in the Easter Road position, are they then shown their marching orders.

That is what happened when Australian Nick Montgomery arrived in Leith last September and after Hibernian failed to reach the top six for the end of season split, the former Sheffield United player failed to see out the end of the season.

Therefore, another new face was required to lead the green and white half of Edinburgh and although it may be a new face in terms of permanent appointment, it is a face that is very familiar in Easter Road circles.

Not only because David Gray is famous for scoring the winning goal in the 2016 Scottish Cup final but because the former Hibs star has also been interim manager on three occasions before finally getting the job on a permanent basis three months ago.

A job that seen Gray lead Hibernian out of the Scottish League Cup group stage with three wins from four outings – even if there was a humbling defeat at the hands of League 1 outfit Kelty Hearts in the other.

Then again, it has also seen the managerial bridesmaid turned bride having to oversee an opening weekend Premiership defeat at St Mirren. The Buddies were only in European action less than 72 hours before, they still romped to a 3-0 win on home soil last Sunday.

That same afternoon, Sunday’s opponents Celtic were also romping to victory on home soil. Not only was their 4-0 demolition of Kilmarnock considered the perfect start to the campaign, it was further enhanced by Rangers’ inability to win the day before.

Ibrox’s finest were far from fine at Tynecastle on Saturday afternoon as they laboured to a 0-0 draw with Hearts. Already Brendan Rodgers’ men find themselves two points clear of their nearest rivals; many expect that margin to eventually be far greater come the end of the season.

With Rangers having to play a number of home games away from Ibrox, that coupled with their reported ongoing financial woes looks set to undercut any title bid to the point that the only team that look capable of stopping Celtic from another league title are Celtic themselves.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and as always with Celtic, the biggest challenge is trying to squeeze value out of games such as this. However, I think there is value in the visitors winning both halves and this can be backed at odds of 2/1 with bet365.

In addition to this, I think Celtic will record a second comprehensive league win in as many weekends and with the 3-0 away win currently being priced at the inviting odds of 17/2 with bet365, that is also going straight on Sunday’s betting slip.
