Grand National Race Stats & Trends
To help you pick a winner in this competitive race, we've compiled this Grand National Stats and Trends Guide.
This will hopefully aid punters in pinpointing the runners that match the ideal winning profile when exploring horse racing betting sites.
Favourites
The Grand National is famous for shock results such as Mon Mome winning at 100/1 in 2009 for trainer Venetia Williams.
However, in the last 33 renewals, eight Grand National winners have been the favourites, while 19 market leaders secured a top-four finish.
Notably, the favourite or joint-favourite has won the last two Nationals, with three of the last five following the same trend.
Grand National Experience
An impressive 23 of the last 29 Grand National winners were making their first appearance in the race.
.
Since the era of Red Rum in the 1970s, only 10 National winners had previously run in the race the year before, with their finishing positions being P4F9F3FF01 - the only dual-winner being Tiger Roll in 2018 and 2019.
Cheltenham Festival Form
Six of the last ten Grand National winners ran at the Cheltenham Festival, but it can be a risky strategy to side with horses that won around Prestbury Park.
Since 1961, only three horses, Seagram, Tiger Roll, and Corach Rambler, followed up Cheltenham Festival victories by winning the Grand National - take note, Stumptown backers!
Irish (And Scottish!) Horses
Irish-trained horses have dominated the Grand National recently, making runners from across the Irish Sea well worth a second look.
Nine of the last 20 National winners hailed from Irish-based stables, including six of the previous eight.
The only two non-Irish winners in that time came from Lucinda Russell’s Scottish stable, meaning the last English-trained winner remains Many Clouds back in 2015.
Amazingly, every Grand National winner in the last eight years has been either an Irish-trained horse or trained by Lucinda Russell!
Hurdles
Look for horses that raced over hurdles at some point earlier that season.
A hurdle run or two often signals a strategic move to protect handicap marks, suggesting that Aintree has been a long-term target.
Notably, five of the last 11 Irish-trained Grand National winners had at least one of their previous two starts over hurdles before heading to Aintree - just like past champions Don’t Push It and Ballabriggs.
