With the October international break now upon us, the focus returns back to the UEFA Nations League and with a third of the league phase already completed for this cycle, both Finland and the Republic of Ireland seem to be pedaling backwards.

While not only are Markku Kanerva’s men yet to earn a Nations League point but they are yet to score a goal and days before they lost 2-0 to England, they also suffered a 3-0 reverse at the hands of Greece.
A 3-0 win for the Greek’s in the first fixture round and one that was quickly followed up by a 2-0 win over Finland’s upcoming opponents and just how the Nordic nation have yet to breach the opposition’s net thus far, the same can be said for the boys in green.
Boys that are now led by Icelander Heimir Hallgrimsson and although the FAI waited a considerable amount of time to name a permanent successor to Stephen Kenny, there is a sense that the time spent has not been worth the wait.
Nothing to offer against the Greek national team, the same can be said for September’s showing at the Aviva Stadium against England and if this Irish side is to improve under Hallgrimsson, a cutting edge needs to be discovered sooner rather than later.
