Everton v Newcastle Match Preview
For all the dark clouds that have been stubbornly hanging over Goodison Park these past couple of years, there may just be a change of forecast in both the short and the long-term. In the short-term, last Saturday saw Everton pick up their first league win of the season at home to Crystal Palace.
In the long-term, the club’s financial issues may have taken a considerable step towards being solved and with its sale to the American-owned Friedkin Group reportedly priced at £400m, the Farhad Moshiri-era is set to end.
An era that will be nothing short of forgettable when looked back upon in a few years. Not only because of the product on the field of play but also the products of the transfer business that has taken place under the watchful eye of Moshiri.
An eye-watering amount of money being spent on an eye-watering amount of uninspiring talent. At times it feels the club has been operating by the death of a thousand cuts and had used up 999 of those allocated.
However, current manager Sean Dyche has managed to keep this Everton-sized shipwreck in the Premier League over the past couple of seasons and although the club’s future looks like it could be healthier, it may have put his own future at risk.
New owners sometimes equals a new face at the helm, and this is a situation that Saturday’s opponents know only too well after the baton of ownership transferred from Mike Ashley to the Saudi Arabian-based PIF.
The only person not celebrating Newcastle’s takeover was Steve Bruce and with Eddie Howe installed as his replacement soon after, it is the former Bournemouth man who still finds himself in the St James’ Park technical area today.
A technical area that last Saturday saw Newcastle draw at home to Manchester City and although the current defending champions took the lead through Josip Gvardiol’s well-worked effort, it was a former Everton player who restored parity after the interval.
Anthony Gordon may not be loved on his return to Merseyside, but he is certainly adored on Tyneside and with his penalty giving the Magpies a share of the points last Saturday, he will be extra motivated in his attempt to earn Newcastle all three points at the end of this.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and because of Gordon’s extra incentive to find the net, I am going to back the England international and Eddie Howe’s men to pick up at least a point at Goodison. This two-leg bet builder of scorer and double chance is priced at 4/1 with Unibet.
In addition to this, Harvey Barnes has been a rather handy player for Newcastle as of late and even if he does not start, that should not dampen his scoring ability. Therefore, I am also backing the former Leicester forward to score the last goal of the game at odds of 8/1 with bet365.
