Serbia vs England Match Preview

Go One Better

Although defeat to Iceland in their final pre-tournament friendly was not on Gareth Southgate’s agenda, it has done little to dampen the mood of the England manager before this weekend’s Group C clash with Serbia.

With Gareth Southgate acting in his usual manner post-game, the hyperbole has been left for others to dish out and with that Wembley reverse now in the history books, England’s objective will be to dish out a defeat at the expense of Serbia.

It’s an objective that will be undertaken by the talented triumvirate of Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham and with this trio ready to serve as the supply for captain Harry Kane, this awesome attacking foursome could be the key to England’s eventual outright success.

If they are to be the key, then the locking up of England’s defence is arguably manager Southgate’s biggest concern and with fitness concerns over the usually imperious John Stones, it could be a late decision on whether the Manchester City defender starts on Sunday.

With this concern going alongside the ongoing fitness or lack thereof of Luke Shaw, it may be that England have to attack their way out of the group stages before two of the team’s defensive mainstays can be fully fit for the knockout phase.

At the same time, England know that they can only take one game at a time and defeat to Iceland last Friday may serve as a reminder to not get too far ahead of yourselves. In the strangest of ways, that loss in London may not have been the worst thing to happen to this squad.

However, defeat at the hands of Serbia could not be simply brushed away with the same relaxed attitude and with their last pre-tournament outing being a rather impressive showing against Sweden, they will arrive in Germany in confident mood.

A mood that would have improved after defeat to Austria just a few days before but after getting the minority share of three goals against Ralf Ragnick’s men, they scored three unanswered goals against the Swedes just a few days later.

One of those goals was scored by Alexsander Mitrovic and although the former Fulham man is no longer a weekly talking point within the confines of English football, he will look to be a talking point at the end of the week.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and because of England’s slight defensive concerns, I can see them shipping a goal before returning to winning ways. With this in mind, I am backing the Three Lions to roar but both teams to score at odds of 5/2.

In addition to this, I will also opt for the correct score and with both teams getting on the scoresheet, a 2-1 win is the starting point. A point that I do not need to move on from. Therefore, I am also backing this at 8/1.
