England v Switzerland Match Preview

Leaving It Late

With 94 minutes on the clock against Slovakia, it looked as if Gareth Southgate would soon be calling time on his tenure as England manager. With 95 minutes on the clock, the head of the Three Lions was given a temporary stay of execution with just seconds remaining.

Because with Jude Bellingham’s acrobatic overhead kick restoring parity against Slovakia, it meant that England were given 30 additional minutes to not only keep Southgate in his managerial post but also try and advance to the last eight of the European Championships.

They were given 30 minutes, they only needed 60 seconds to complete the task in hand and with Harry Kane’s header finally putting England ahead, they only had to see out the remaining additional 29 minutes to progress from the Round of 16.

Not the way they would have wanted to book their ticket to the quarter-finals and Saturday’s clash with Switzerland but perhaps there has to be a concession when looking at how the Euro 2020 finalists have played to date – a concession that admits tournament football is a different beast.

A beast that ultimately demands results over performances and although England’s four showings in Germany have been far from pretty, they are where they need to be, and they have a far easier run to the final then those nations on the other side of the knockout bracket.

That run that now sees Switzerland as their next opponent and although a repeat of the Euro 2020 final against Italy was earmarked for Saturday evening, it is fair to say that the Swiss had other ideas exactly a week prior.

Admittedly, the Italians were poor not only in that game against Murat Yakin’s men but also in the role as previous winners but at the same time, the Swiss still had to show what they are all about if they were to advance to the last eight themselves.

With a goal in either half, Italy were blown away and with their opposition largely being known as a defensive team first, it is also fair to say that they are showing much more in terms of attacking endeavour this time around.

Because with the Swiss, they are usually considered your typical Round of 16 team. Absolutely no issue in terms of getting out of the group stage at major tournaments, the issues only start thereafter. Now though, the shackles are off, and they are aiming to cause English anguish.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and although there may be a tactical switch in terms of England personnel, I still think the handbrake will be largely applied. Add this, to a tight Swiss defence and I am backing the Three Lions to win and under 2.5 goals at 3/1 with Betfair.

In addition to this, we should not overlook England’s defence either and it with being largely the plus point of their tournament – bar the odd lapse in concentration, I am also backing them to concentrate on a clean sheet, as they pick up a 2-0 win at 11/1 with SpreadEx.
