The first trophy of the English season is up for grabs on Sunday, with Liverpool and Newcastle meeting at Wembley in the final of the EFL Cup.

Liverpool are looking to bounce back immediately from being knocked out of the Champions League on penalties by PSG on Tuesday night, and a win would be a significant milestone for Arne Slot in his first season as manager.

However it is potentially more significant for Newcastle, who have not won a major title since the FA Cup in 1955.

We have some special offers and EFL Cup Final free bets from our range of football betting sites and betting tips from Lewis Watson to have a look at ahead of the game.

Liverpool and Newcastle United go head-to-head inside Wembley Stadium this Sunday looking to claim the first domestic silverware of the season.

For champions-elect Liverpool, it’s a chance to stamp their authority on the 2024-25 season with an early marker of their dominance, while for Newcastle it offers the rare chance to end their 70-year drought for a domestic trophy.

Liverpool and Newcastle are famed for putting on memorable matches between them, so will this famous rivalry light up the Wembley arch once again this weekend?

After PSG chucked Liverpool out of the Champions League on Tuesday, Arne Slot’s Reds will be licking their wounds as they head south to the capital.

Slot has been faultless in his maiden Premier League season and has the perfect opportunity to right the wrongs of their penalty shootout loss by grabbing his first trophy as Liverpool boss.

For Eddie Howe it’s a second League Cup final in three seasons, and another opportunity to bring silverware back to the Geordie faithful for the first time since 1955.

Newcastle beat Manchester City 3-1 in that FA Cup final 70 years ago, and will be hoping for a similarly fast start that saw them go 1-0 up inside the first minute.

But with injuries and suspensions plaguing the squad, the Magpies will have to do it the hard way, against the hardest test.

Yet another thriller?

Although 1996 and 1997’s two 4-3s feel like yesterday to some of us, nearly three decades have passed since this rivalry was dubbed as unmissable.

Still, the current crop have done their best to reignite this sentiment.

We had a thrilling 3-3 back in December this season and a 4-2 Liverpool win last January, adding to the 14 goals across their last three meetings.

We’re happy to be swept up in the spirit of this fixture, but an upset might be a little push too far. Liverpool to win and over 3.5 goals is at 11/4 with Betfred.

Isak to have his moment

Mo Salah aside, Alexander Isak is probably the most in-form player in England at the moment.

The 25-year-old has scored 17 goals in his last 20 appearances in black and white, and seems capable in scoring any type of goal against any type of opponent.

If Newcastle are to lay a glove on Liverpool this Sunday, then Isak is going to have to turn up.

Alexander Isak to score anytime is at 7/4 with Betfred.
