DP World Tour Championship 2-Ball Betting Tips - Day One
Check out my three selections for the opening round at in Dubai on Thursday.
DP World Tour Championship Preview
Last weekend’s Abu Dhabi Championship was a thrill from start to close, with Paul Waring snaffling his first Rolex Series title and just his second piece of silverware on the DP World Tour.
Rory McIlroy looks poised to clinch the Harry Vardon trophy for the sixth time come Sunday given his 1,785-point lead over closest challenger Thriston Lawrence.
Earlier this week, I ran the rule on the state of play ahead of the event, but this time I have turned my attention to the first round.
Tommy Fleetwood to beat Niklas Norgaard
Tommy Fleetwood has an affinity with the Middle East, and he claimed the Dubai Invitational earlier this year.
At the Earth Course which will stage this week’s event, Fleetwood has flourished, posting numerous top-six finishes and thrives in warmer climes.
In terms of lowest average rounds, Fleetwood has managed an average of 68.92 from the 24 rounds he has played there.
The Danes, meanwhile, could fare well this week, and Niklas Norgaard will want to put himself in contention.
Over the past five weeks, he has comfortably been in the top 30, and he’s moved between the gears when he needed to on the front and back nine.
This seems like quite a tight 2-ball to call as both have been exceptional this term, but to open my 2-ball betting tips, I’m going with Fleetwood to come out on top.
Tyrrell Hatton to beat Paul Waring
Coming off the back of a superb win at the Abu Dhabi Championship, Waring will feel like the sky's the limit.
A scintillating round of 61 on Friday saw him seize control and while others, including Tyrrell Hatton, tried to reel him in, he held on for a huge payday.
Hatton’s stats stack up fairly well, and he’s third this season for GIR (greens in regulation) which puts him in good stead for this week.
While his on-course antics can rile some fans, I can’t fault his desire to strive for perfection.
While the pressure may be off Waring, it will be difficult to replicate that high. For my second pick, I’m backing Hatton to finish ahead of Waring after the first round.
Rory McIlroy to beat Thriston Lawrence
As mentioned earlier, McIlroy is primed to land the Race to Dubai crown once again, but he can’t take anything for granted.
The permutations are relatively straightforward and were Lawrence to win the DP World Tour Championship, McIlroy would most likely have to finish 11th or lower to see the title slip from his grasp.
With 17 DP World Tour titles to his name, McIlroy is a serial winner, and a T25 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last month was a rare blemish on a copybook where he has had a clutch of top-five finishes.
The near miss at the US Open doesn’t seem to have affected him too much, but Lawrence, who had a T6 last week, quashed any worries following a string of mediocre displays in the run-up to that.
McIlroy will want to lay down a marker, and I think he should take the honours in this 2-ball.
