Derby v Norwich Match Preview
Norwich produced their best performance since the Daniel Farke days on Saturday, dismantling Watford in a 4-1 thumping.
Callum Doyle looks the key to it in his inverted left-back role because, as well as being able to get forward and create like a conventional full-back, he can also tuck into an in-possession back three when Jack Stacey or Kellen Fisher goes forward – but he can also create a ‘box’ midfield.
Doyle drifting centrally to link up with Kenny McLean, in turn, frees up Marcelino Nunez to find the left channel, and either link up with Borja Sainz on the left wing, or Oscar Schwartau, who is the conventional number 10.
Head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup has ideas that are far more advanced than anything that was served up under Dean Smith or David Wagner, both of whom relied on individual quality to carry them through – but that was never going to be enough if they got to the Premier League.
Now, there’s a clear plan in place and something for the Yellow Army to buy into, which is the biggest cause for Norfolkian optimism.
Of course, City’s glistening showing had something to do with Watford’s lackadaisical defending, something Derby are unlikely to be guilty of under a culture-led manager like Paul Warne.
However, Norwich at their best are clearly a notch ahead of their hosts, so 8/5 quotes on the away win look generous.
