Clinton Morrison: Daniel Farke needs to drop Illan Meslier & why Liam Delap belongs in the top flight

April 3, 2025 at 3:05 pm GMT+1

This week with Clinton we discuss the race to return to the Premier League after a change at the top of the Championship, Ipswich's fight for survival and Liam Delap's progress this season.

Looking ahead to this weekend of action, we've picked out some key fixtures and put some predictions alongside some of our top football betting offers.

So, looking ahead to the weekend, here's what Clinton had to say when speaking exclusively to Free Bets:

Leeds Are Falling Apart?

Q: It’s all up in the air at the top of the Championship after Leeds’ recent run in form, and it’s all up for grabs in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League. How do you see it?

I'm still going to stick my neck on the line and say Leeds are going to be strong enough to hold on, but it is starting to get tight. They’ll be nervous at the moment. I think Sheffield United are in fantastic form. I think they're probably the most in-form team alongside Burnley at the moment, and to have the -2 points as well and for Sheffield United to still be where they are - I think it's a testament to Chris Wilder.

But he spent well and the players that he's brought in have all come in and contributed. He's got a strong bench, he's got players that can come on and change the game.

Leeds are just on that slippery slope at the moment where you know, you're thinking to yourself, ‘can you go and get the win’ and stuff like that. They're getting draws, but I feel their fans will play a big part in them getting promoted.

I still think it'll be Leeds and probably one other. It is more than likely looking like Sheffield United. But I think that as I said, the Easter break where Sheffield United play Burnley is the big one.

If Burnley and Sheffield United keep winning until then, I think that will decide who probably finishes second. But Leeds' run of games are very nice for them - but I said that last week when they played Swansea at home thatI thought it'd be a comfortable win for them.

They are making it hard for themselves at the moment.

Q: You mention those January transfers, are we seeing the benefits of Burnley and Sheffield United strengthening whereas Leeds refused to, and are potentially running out of gas? Although Leeds are still favourites with most betting sites...

I think you needed to add to the squad. I was surprised Daniel Farke didn't do business because he's had injuries this season, and I was thinking he may bring in a few loans that weren't playing in the Premier League from now to the end of the season or look abroad to bring players in. I know it might not have been permanent, but just to add more bodies and competition for places even though their bench is quite strong.

But you're right, Sheffield United have brought in players. They've spent a lot of money on Cannon and he can't even get in the side because Campbell's smashing it and Keiffer Moore is the first sub. I know he's picked up an injury at the moment, but that's how strong Sheffield United are at the minute. They've got some top players.

They had O’Hare sitting on the bench the other day, so they do have quite a lot of strength in depth at the moment. They recruited well and that’s probably why they’re flying. Leeds are having a tiny bit of a wobble, but I still think they’ll be too strong and I still think they’ll get promoted.

Illan Meslier

Q:Illan Meslier made two more costly errors at the weekend and has now cost Leeds quite a lot of points this season with mistakes against Sunderland, Hull and Swansea for starters. If you’re Daniel Farke do you have to roll the dice and take him out of the firing line for his own good, as much as the team?

I'm all for giving goalkeepers a chance and not really throwing them out there.

I understand if he's your best goalkeeper, he's your best goalkeeper, but you can't be losing six to eight points through keeper errors - that could be the difference between getting promoted or falling into the playoffs.

The back-up goalkeeper is Karl Darlow. Darlow has got Premier League experience, so why would you not put Darlow in?

If I'm a centre-forward and my competition is not scoring goals in five or six games, I'm thinking to myself, how am I not getting the opportunity? So Karl Darlow as a goalkeeper must be thinking, how am I not getting the opportunity?

Meslier is making a lot of mistakes. It was disappointing to see him make two against Swansea, where he shouldn’t have dropped the ball. I know everyone makes mistakes, but he’s made a few including the one at Sunderland. Even the second goal's gone underneath his body against Swansea. Goalkeepers work on that. He's still young and he's still a top goalkeeper and he will come back.

But if I’m Daniel Farke, you just need to take him out of the firing line because Leeds fans are going to be absolutely nervous when any crosses come into the box or anyone has a shot on their goal. It isn’t good for the player either.

At this moment in time, I would probably take him out the firing line, give Karl Darlow an opportunity and see where you go. If they get promoted, everyone's happy. He goes back to being a number one next season. But just take him out of the firing line for a little bit. I don't think he will, though.

I don't think Daniel Farke will because I think loads of people have been saying it before when he's made mistakes and I think he's headstrong to say, ‘he's my number one. I'm sticking with him’. But how does your number two feel then? Is he ever going to get an opportunity?

Q: What happens in that situation if you’re a teammate of his? They look a bit exasperated sometimes, but can you ever go in and have a word with the manager that you’ve lost confidence in him?

You get frustrated. I don't think they would do that, though. I think you have to stick with your teammates. I don't think anyone can go behind your teammate’s back and say that to the manager.

I think everyone in the ground can see he's going through a bad time at the moment, so the best thing to do is take him out of the action and let him have a bit of a break. But sometimes managers want to try and get them to get over it and carry on playing.

I think Leeds, if you look at their group, they look like they're a good group. I see Rodon was frustrated when the goals went in, and you can show your frustration on the pitch for sure because it shows you care.

But as players that's when you have to get behind your teammate and say, keep going. It's one of those things. I think it’s more down to the manager than the players. He lives and dies by his decisions and he has to make the right decisions. But he's still confident. I heard him come out and say he's still confident that they're going to get promoted and I have to agree with him. I still think they will get promoted.

Q: Leeds are away at Luton on Saturday which looked like it would be a more straightforward game a few weeks ago, but they’re in good form now and have given themselves a good chance of avoiding relegation

Luton have been good recently. Matt Bloomfield took his time when he went in there but now they've picked up, but Luton should never be in a relegation scrap. I don't understand what's happened at that football club. They only lost a couple of players. I think Lokonga went and Ross Barkley, but it can't be two players that make a team. He's still got a lot of top talented players that have done well in the Premier League.

So for whatever reason they struggled and it hasn’t been good enough. Rob Edwards lost his job and Matt Bloomfield went in there and they're still in a relegation scrap because the teams in and around them are winning football matches.

It’s all to play for at the top and bottom of the Championship and it's so exciting. But it's a tough game for Leeds.

It's a very tough game for Leeds because they're going to a team now who now have got a bit of confidence. I know they beat Hull the other day through an own goal, so they're not really scoring all the goals that they were doing before. But it's just a hard one because Leeds are not in good form at the moment, and it’s hard going to Kenilworth Road.

Q: It’s Coventry v Burnley on Saturday, a big game given the form of both teams. How do you see that going?

That is a big game. You know what? I probably think that could be a draw. Coventry are good at home, really good at home. And Burnley are a very good team at the moment.

Coventry can do Leeds and Sheffield United a favour. I think Frank Lampard needs to secure a play-off place and needs to bounce back as well after Friday night. So it's a huge football match for both teams.

Championship Relegation

Q: You mention the bottom of the Championship, and Derby have really been on a good run with four wins on the bounce. It’s very tight down there

The run they've been on. Ridiculous. All the teams are sucked in like from, I would say from Portsmouth, Swansea and QPR. Now all those teams are still in a dogfight.

I think Plymouth will go. I think they're gone. I think they are cut adrift. But can you imagine Luton having back-to-back relegations?

Q: Who else would you pick out for relegation?

I'd probably say Hull or Oxford.. I think Luton have enough to get out of trouble. I think Cardif will go down too.

John Eustace has gone and done a brilliant job at Derby but you never know.

Premier League Relegation

Q: Onto the Premier League, and a big win for Ipswich last night after Wolves got three points on Tuesday.

I thought it was all over after Tuesday. Wolves celebrated like it was all over. They were 12 points clear and celebrated like it was all over. It was a big win because if West Ham had won, then Ipswich had won on Wednesday and then they play each other on Saturday, the gap could easily have been down to three points.

It's still a massive result for Ipswich. I know Bournemouth haven’t been in fantastic form recently, but they've had an outstanding season and Iraola’s done a brilliant job and to go there and beat them 2-1 was fantastic

It should give them confidence. It’s a Wolves team that still doesn't have Matthias Cunha. So it could go down to six points and then you start to get nervous and you look at the fixtures and think, back-to-back wins for Ipswich could give them confidence.

Saturday is a really massive game. I still think Wolves will have enough to survive but you just never know with Ipswich after that result yesterday, no one really predicted it and no one could have called it.

Q: Is it last chance for Ipswich?

Yeah, of course it is. If you don't beat Wolves, you're basically gone. I thought it was all over until that result and I still probably think it is all over. I still want them to have a fighting chance because I think they deserve it.

I think the job McKenna's done with back-to-back promotions and stuff has been fantastic. I hope they can get a result against Wolves, and their relegation is not over. But you're right, it is the last chance.

Liam Delap

Q: Delap has been a good player for them this season hasn’t he?

Eleven Premier League goals this season. He’s been fantastic. Whatever happens, he won't be at Ipswich I don't think next season. There'll be a lot of Premier League clubs watching him and I think he's been fantastic.

I know the family well because we're always over at the family's house. They’re a great family, a humble family and he's a good kid. I've spoken to him a few times. He just wants to play football and he enjoys it and plays with a smile on his face. So good luck to him. I think he'll be in the England squad very soon as well.

I think Tuchel will have a look at him. He probably was close to it recently because he's an old-fashioned centre-forward and he just wants to knock center halves around and get stuck in. I love watching him. He's been outstanding and he'll be a Premier League player no matter what happens next season.

Q: How high do you think his ceiling is?

Very high. I think even Pep said, I think Man City probably look at it now and think, why did we let him go? They lost Alvarez and Haaland has had a lot of injuries, and I think Liam could have been a player who could come off the bench and make a big difference for Man City.

I think even Arsenal were linked to him. I think he can go to a top club. But you’ve got to realize he's still young, so you just have to work your way up the ladder to get to them Premier League clubs.

Aston Villa

Q: Aston Villa were another club to mention. That’s an eye-catching win over Brighton and they’ve been in hot form since making those late January additions

They've been brilliant. They've been outstanding. To be fair, huge credit must go to them and Unai Emery, because to go to Brighton and beat them 3-0 and Brighton are a very good team that were pushing, maybe could have got into the top four.

There's still a lot to play for with Europe but you're right, I thought it was brilliant. I think Marcus Ratchford looks like a player who's enjoying his football again and playing on the shoulder. It makes me laugh because people said he didn't like playing through the middle at Man United. But he's doing that at the moment because Watkins has picked up a slight injury, and he’s taking it with both hands

We want to see Marcus Rashford happy like we’re seeing at the moment, playing with a smile on his face, enjoying scoring goals. Full credit to him.

Manchester Derby

Q: That leads us onto the Manchester Derby this weekend. They were pretty toothless against Forest on Tuesday, and it’s quite damning when you end up with Harry Maguire playing up front for the final minutes

That is crazy when that happens. We're talking about Man United Football Club and that's not being disrespectful to Harry Maguire, but Harry Maguire is the one who's trying to get you a goal to salvage a point at Nottingham Forest? This is the big Man United Football Club. It's disappointing at the moment, but that's where Man United are.

They need to sell players in the summer to raise funds so Ruben Amarin can spend. But I think when you look at teams in the summer and there's a lot of teams that need to do big business, Man United are right at the top of the list of where they need to clear out and start again.

They're going to have to do that to raise funds to be able to bring in players that are going to be able to adapt to the way Ruben Amorim wants to play. Because it's damning at the moment. It looks like Man United are going to finish in the bottom half of the table, which for me is very strange for that football club. But that's where they are at the minute. I think most Man United fans have kind of accepted it and they're probably looking forward to next season.

Q: And it can’t help the current players when one of the owners comes out and says half the squad shouldn’t be playing for the club, or are well overpaid…

Sometimes with owners, owners like to let the manager manage a team and talk about the player.

I get it. You're paying the big money. You're paying their wages and it's your football club. So you're entitled to have an opinion.

But it doesn't help the players that are playing at the moment where you're coming out and saying that some of the players are not good enough to play and shouldn't be earning the money that they're on. But that's done and dusted now. That's the previous owner who was there and gave them that contract, and the player signs it - it’s not their fault

You don't need your chairman coming out and kind of criticizing the players. It's not right because you still need to perform from now to the end of the season and they've still got a good chance of going far in the Europa League and maybe winning the trophy.

Q: It’s probably not as big a game as it has been in recent years, but they’ve tended to play well against big sides under Amorim, so that should add a bit of interest?

At the end of the day, you want bragging rights. Fans want the bragging rights and you've got to play. You're playing for your football club. It's a Manchester derby. You want to earn the right to say we're the best team at Manchester at the moment because we've just beaten you.

So you definitely have to roll your sleeves up and go and give it a go. And that's what these players will be doing. Ruben Amorim knows Man United fans are not accepting of them just rolling over and letting Man City beat them.

It's a big game for Man City because they're still trying to finish in the Champions League spots. And I said it's going to go right down to the wire. So it's a massive game for them.

There's no easy games in the Premier League, especially when it comes to the Manchester Derby. So that's a game that I'm thinking could be tight because you're right, Man United do usually turn up, but I'm looking at them now thinking, who is going to score you a goal?

No Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes has been good for them, but you can't rely on one player.

You still make Man City favorites to beat Man United on the weekend, but you expect Man United to turn up.
