Chelsea v Newcastle Match Preview
Although you would not put Chelsea in the category of title-winning teams this season, you would arguably put them in the category of teams that are capable of lifting some form of silverware by the end of the campaign.
Silverware may come in the form of the UEFA Conference League and after Enzo Maresca’s men recorded a resounding 4-1 at Panathinaikos in midweek, their focus now shifts back to domestic matters.
Matters that saw the Blues feel the blues last Sunday and although they certainly gave a good account of themselves against Liverpool at Anfield, they failed to add any further points to their Premier League account.
That coupled with Brighton’s win at Newcastle the day before means that Chelsea start this weekend’s action lying sixth in the table and there is a slight chance they could be pushed a position further down after Nottingham Forest’s trip to Leicester on Friday.
Regardless of what happens in the East Midlands, it is what happens in West London what is most important, and that statement does not only apply to Chelsea but the team that they host at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Visitors Newcastle arrive in the capital having failed to win any of their last four Premier League outings and they have also failed to score in either of their last two. Not the run of form that is conducive to earning European football at the end of the season.
Something that they missed out last time around and something that manager Eddie Howe knows cannot happen again as the pressure regarding his managerial status and the lack of joined-up transfer policy rumbles on.
That is not to say that the Magpies have not had their chances – a missed Anthony Gordon penalty at Everton and plenty of missed chances at home to Brighton are testament to that but it is the lack of additional players that could have converted those opportunities that seems to be the real issue.
Of course, Howe can only work with what he has got between now and January at the earliest and most importantly, the former Bournemouth manager has to make sure he does not become the former Newcastle manager at the turn of the year.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and although Chelsea could potentially be leggy after a trip to Greece in midweek, their gargantuan squad should ease any potential fatigue. With that in mind, I am backing Enzo Maresca’s men to win and under 3.5 goals at odds of 11/5 with bet365.
In addition to this, I think Newcastle’s woes in front of goal will continue as they draw another blank on Sunday. To reinforce this point, I am also going to back a routine 2-0 home win at the tempting price of 12/1 with William Hill.
