Charlton v Bolton Match Preview

Charlton have begun their 2024-25 campaign with successive 1-0 wins, with Nathan Jones’ side victorious at Wigan on the opening day before Luke Berry’s injury-time goal gave them another three points against Leyton Orient at The Valley.

Nathan Jones’ side are building what they hope will be a sustained promotion push on solid defensive foundations, with Lloyd Jones proving an aerial monster at the back and Conor Coventry providing a level of class and positional discipline akin to a lower league Michael Carrick.

The Addicks haven’t been hugely creative, though, taking just 14 shots, the joint-fewest in League One with Shrewsbury, whilst mustering an xGF of 2.02 from their first two games.

To put that in laymen’s terms, it’s not as if they’ve scored two goals but they’ve fashioned enough clear cut chances to suggest they might have scored three or four.

So, it’s plausible that the South Londoners fire a blank this time around, given that visitors Bolton have arguably the best goalkeeper in the league in Nathan Baxter.

The Trotters kept 14 clean sheets from the 33 games Baxter started last season, compared to just three in the 13 that he missed – and there’s a belief that had he stayed available throughout, Ian Evatt’s side might have pipped Derby to the top two post.

Baxter was outstanding on the opening day of this campaign, too, helping the Wanderers to a 2-1 victory at Leyton Orient, before last week’s clean sheet against Wrexham.
