Celtic v Rangers Match Preview

It may only be the fourth week of the new Scottish Premiership season but already there is daylight between the two Glasgow giants. Daylight measured at a distance of two points for champions Celtic before they welcome Rangers through their doors on Sunday.

For Celtic it has been business as usual both on and off the field of play. On the field, it is three successive league wins for Brendan Rodgers’ men at the start of the campaign, off the field their business model has seen another big name go south.

Matt O’Riley is the latest on the list of players who have swapped the Hoops for the bright lights of the English Premier League – although his debut in the competition will be delayed due to injury, and once again a high-profile sale sees the money roll in for the Celtic Park outfit.

Whether the club’s board spend enough money is often argued by their supporters and although the recent capture of Adam Idah from Norwich for £9.5m shows ambition on the board’s part, the support believe that should be just the bare minimum.

At the same time, many will feel that the bare minimum is all that needs to be spent if rumours regarding Rangers own bank account are to be believed. Why empty the war chest when your rivals have nothing to go to war with?

Just spending enough but still winning outright seems to be perceived as business acumen these days and if Celtic have it in spades, the Rangers have been seemingly digging their own downfall when it comes to recruitment.

Manager Philippe Clement was rewarded with a new contract in the summer but the names he has drafted in since are not getting pulses racing at Ibrox – then again, the club are not even playing at their hollowed ground for the foreseeable future.

They may have made rather light work of Ross County last weekend but there are still rumblings of discontent after their exit in the Champions League qualifiers – even more so, now that the expanded group stage draw has now been made.

While there will be even more so, if Rangers fall to another derby day defeat and with the way things have already panned out in the first month of the season, a gap of five points at this stage may eventually be too big to claw back.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with Celtic having won each of their last nine Scottish Premiership outings and the Scottish Cup final back in May. I am backing them to come out on top on Sunday. A draw at the interval is required first though and this is priced at 15/4.

In addition to this, high stakes affairs all bring high amounts of pressure and there is no worse way to buckle than by scoring an own goal on derby day. Should this happen on Sunday, the outcome is available at odds of 9/1.
