Canelo Alvarez v Edgar Berlanga Boxing Betting Tips & Betting Offers

Updated: September 13, 2024 at 4:30 pm GMT+1

“The Canelo Show” rolls into Las Vegas once again this weekend and Edgar Berlanga is the latest in line to reap the rewards of sharing a ring with the Mexican great.

This super-middleweight contest lands inside the T-Mobile and is for the WBO and WBC world titles, but more importantly than that, it is stoking a rivalry that has a rich history in boxing.

Despite being born in Brooklyn, New York, Edgar Berlanga fights as a Puerto Rican and therefore it’s a Mexican-Puerto Rico derby on Saturday night… possibly even spicier than the north London derby a few hours later?

Canelo has only two losses on his record – to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013 and Dmitry Bivol up at an unnatural light-heavyweight, so if Berlanga is to do the unthinkable this weekend in Vegas, the 27-year-old will join an illustrious group.

Let’s take a closer look at the fight that will dominate the boxing, and wider sporting headlines this weekend, plus the top boxing betting offers from the best betting sites.

Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga Betting Tips

Check out below our two betting tips for Canelo v Berlanga on Saturday evening.

Canelo Alvarez to beat Edgar Berlanga by Decision/Technical Decision

Despite Canelo’s accolades, he hasn’t managed to stop an opponent since Caleb Plant in 2021. If Berlanga’s best bet of an upset is to fight fire with fire, the Canelo is going to have to be smart off the back foot and with his counter punching, so it wouldn’t surprise us if Canelo boxed to a wide points decision in order to play safe.

Canelo Alvarez to score 2 or more knockdowns

Berlanga has been knocked down before (in 2021 vs Marcelo Coceres) so he knows how to rise from the canvas and complete the distance. Canelo has gotten into the habit of taking his foot off the gas through large periods of fights, so if he is to knock Berlanga down, then it’s not guaranteed that he will instinctively go for the kill.

Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga - Fight Preview

Edgar Berlanga may not have been the first name on everyone’s list to fight Canelo Alvarez this September, but in truth, it’s a list that is getting shorter and shorter.

Canelo is now 34 years old and 65 fights into an incredible career that has seen him win world titles in four weight classes from light-middleweight to light-heavyweight.

David Benavidez – the standout rival left at 168lbs – is the obvious fight to make, but if Canelo and his team can make millions and millions by taking less dangerous opponents on in the interim, then, unfortunately, that is their prerogative.

But, Edgar Berlanga is certainly no joke.

“The Chosen One” burst onto our television screens as an ESPN fighter who went 16-0 in his first 16 fights blitzing out each and every one of his opponents in the first round, giving him the reputation of a one-punch killer, and someone that anyone between 160-168lbs should avoid…

But since that 16-0 run came to an end in 2020, Berlanga has eased to five decision wins in six fights, and some are claiming that the magic has gone now that his opposition has improved.

Berlanga isn’t the worst name Canelo could of chosen and he’s no where near the worst that Canelo has fought since the pandemic (see Avni Yildirim), but it is widely expected that Canelo will win this weekend unless Berlanga can do something out of the ordinary.

If the Puerto Rican comes flying out of the blocks and can catch Canelo with some heavy, early artillery, then it will be interesting to see how the granite chin of the Mexican can hold up over 12 rounds, but fighting Canelo is a lot easier on paper than it is inside the ring.

Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KO)

Canelo Alvarez has been at the very top of the sport for the best part of a decade and has continually found himself in the pound-for-pound arguments.

Sure, he’s not the same fighter that went to hell and back with Gennady Golovkin on three occasions between 2017-2022, but there is still plenty left in the tank of the Mexican great and, importantly, more money to be made.

His two losses in 65 fights have both come with asterisk’s – he was thrown in too early with Floyd Mayweather and he was thrown in too heavy with Dmitry Bivol, but two meeting’s with Golovkin where he avoided defeat were also seen as very controversial.

One thing you can’t accuse Canelo Alvarez of however is ducking the biggest fights in the divisions he has campaigned in.

Golovkin, Danny Jacobs, Sergey Kovalev, Callum Smith, Miguel Cotto, Caleb Plant, Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia were all champions in their own right when fighting Canelo, and the Guadalajara fighter always found a way to come out on top.

All eyes are now pointing towards a Canelo-Benavidez super-fight in 2025, but Canelo is wily and experienced enough to know that he can’t take his eye off the Berlanga-sized ball this weekend, as he looks to record the 62nd win of his 19-year career.

Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KO)

Blink, and you would have missed the first 16 fights of Edgar Berlanga’s pro career.

The 28-year-old went 16-0 in first-round KOs across four years of destruction in the middleweight and super-middleweight divisions, and the name he built for himself during that run is arguably what has landed the Puerto Rican this massive opportunity at the weekend.

His two most recent wins – both against Irish fighters Jason Quigley and Patrick McCrory – are arguably the best on his resume, and without wanting to offend Quigley and McCrory, there are a few more rungs that need to be climbed before competing against Canelo Alvarez.

But Berlanga is determined to make the most of his big opportunity on Saturday night and he’s probably banking on Father Time catching up with Canelo quicker than most people think.

Berlanga can punch, sure, but having seen Canelo go 36 rounds with the monstrous Gennady Golovkin and barely come out with a scratch, it’s hard to envisage the Mexican getting hurt inside the T-Mobile Arena.
