Canada v Uruguay Match Preview

Although most footballing eyes will be fixed on Europe this weekend, there are reasons to keep an eye on what is going on in South America and although Argentina versus Colombia is the main event in the United States, the undercard fixture is not all that bad either.

One that pits surprise act Canada against South American powerhouses Uruguay and although both suffered disappointment in midweek, there is still an opportunity for both nations to finish on a relative high.

A high that would come with finishing third in the tournament outright and after Jesse Marsch’s Canada side lost 2-0 to Argentina in the first game of this summer’s competition, not many would have expected them to go on to reach the last four.

However, that 2-0 defeat in the opening outing was not one that necessarily bruised Marsch’s men and with a favourable draw in terms of the rest of Group A, further progress at the expense of Chile and Peru was still a realistic prospect.

Second in the group and the reward of Venezuela in the last eight – a reward taken with both hands to set up another meeting with holders Argentina. However, there was a definite sense of déjà vu as the current world champions would beat Canada in the last four by two goals to nil.

As for opponents Uruguay, they breezed through Group C and after finishing top with a perfect record of three wins from three, they then had to face a misfiring Brazil side in the last eight. A meeting that looked like it was going to end after Marcelo Bielsa’s troops went down to ten.

15 minutes of regulation time remaining and an additional 30 to navigate before penalties. From 12 yards, the numerical advantage in terms of personnel was less valuable to Brazil and Uruguay ended up using it to their advantage.

Brazil dumped out after a shootout, Uruguay into the last four and a date with destiny. Destiny that came in the form of a Colombia team in the hottest form ever – 27 unbeaten before the semi-final and looking to make it 28.

Thanks to Crystal Palace midfielder Jefferson Lerma, that is precisely what happened and with him scoring the game’s only goal, it means Colombia advanced to Monday morning’s final at the expense of the Uruguayans.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and although there is always a sense of after the Lord Mayor’s show in games like this, Marcelo Bielsa will not allow his players to relax and therefore, I am backing Uruguay to win and under 2.5 total goals at odds of 11/4 with bet365.

In addition to this, I am going to look at the scorecast market for the first half and with this in mind, I am also going to back Luis Suarez to get the opening goal and his side to be 1-0 up at the interval – an outcome that is currently priced at 8/1 with bet365.
