Bournemouth v Chelsea Match Preview

With September’s international break now firmly behind us, Bournemouth will look to build on their solid start to the season and considering they had a dreadfully slow start to the previous campaign, this early form will put a smile on the usually affable Andoni Iraola.

When the Spaniard took the Bournemouth reins last summer, there was a sense that his stay in Dorset may not be incredibly long and especially when the Cherries start to last season was incredibly sour.

No win in nine games is always going to put heaps of pressure on any new manager and although it would have been easy to pull the trigger, owner Bill Foley kept the faith in the former Rayo Vallecano manager and since then that faith has been repaid handsomely.

Premier League status intact at the end of 2023/24 and unbeaten at the start of this new nine-month cycle. However, the avoidance of defeat was put under serious threat at Goodison Park just before the international break.

Two goals behind in the 87th minute and if you were a betting person, the probability of Everton seeing out the game with a win was 99.5%. Fast forward 12 or so minutes later and Bournemouth had completed the latest ever comeback smash and grab in a Premier League encounter.

Five points from the first nine on offer and one more than opponents Chelsea currently have in their possession. Their opening three matches have been the model for inconsistency as Enzo Maresca’s men have served up a bit of everything to date.

The good, the bad and the ugly could be a better way to describe it, with an opening weekend defeat at home to Manchester City then being followed by a resounding 6-2 win at Wolves and a disappointing 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

Far from the start that new manager Maresca would have expected and at least a point or two under par from any projected points tally. With the former Leicester boss still working out his best lineup, this cannot be the biggest surprise either.

What was a surprise though was the loan capture of Jadon Sancho before the transfer window was slammed shut for the next few months. Did Chelsea really need him? No. Were they going to add him to their huge collection of players? Of course.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and because of Bournemouth’s unbeaten start to the season and Chelsea being so hard to read thus far, this added to the late Saturday kickoff means the draw at 27/10 leaps off the page for me.

In addition to this, I am going to back Bournemouth to make a late rally in order to share the points at the Vitality Stadium. The Blues ahead at the break but the Cherries peg them back at the final whistle and this one is priced at 14/1.
