Aston Villa v Everton Match Preview

With a debut in the Champions League lurking on the other side of the weekend, Aston Villa will need to make sure they do not look forward to the competition’s infamous anthem too much beforehand.

Before they embark on a continental adventure where the current crop will look to emulate the club’s European Cup success of 1982, Unai Emery’s men will first have to deal with the visit of struggling Everton to Villa Park.

While Villa Park is yet to reward its heroes with any points this season and whereas it was such an impenetrable fortress last season, the sole sojourn on their hallowed ground this time around resulted in a 2-0 loss at home to Arsenal.

A defeat which could have been something far different had Ollie Watkins kept his composure in front of goal and with opportunity missed in front of their own support, Villa have at least taken opportunities on the road.

2-1 wins over both West Ham and Leicester have produced a solid start to the campaign and on the evidence that has been provided, last season’s fourth place finishers could be well placed to repeat the feat.

Goals from Amadou Onana have surfaced in both those wins and how opponents Everton could still do with the registration of the Belgian midfielder on their books. The move sees him swapping Merseyside for the Midlands and also swapping a likely relegation battle for European football.

A relegation battle that even after the third week of the season looks more certainty than likely and with the way that they turned a certain victory at home to Bournemouth into a desperate defeat, the manner of that loss will be of huge concern to manager Sean Dyche.

With all the talk of their new Bramley Dock stadium being ready for the start of next season, at this rate it could be the best ground in the Championship as Everton are already sleepwalking towards the second tier with no points earned from the first nine on offer.

That may be a sweeping statement to make with only one international break behind us but with the way that the Toffees have performed in each of their opening three games, you get the feeling that this particular cat has used up eight of its nine lives and is still living rather dangerously.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and because of Everton’s recent capitulation and the international break having prolonged the agony due to inactivity, I can only envisage a Villa victory. Which means, a home win and a clean sheet to go with it is priced at a respectable 13/8.

In addition to this, I am going to opt for a range bet for my second tip. It does not matter the number of goals, just the minutes. If the total of the timing lies between 135 and 155 (e.g. 5th min, 60th min, 65th min = 140 in a 3-0 Villa win), this combination pays out odds of 8/1.
