Aston Villa v Cardiff Match Preview
Just when you think Aston Villa are building up a head of steam does that same steam then evaporate. Before Tuesday’s trip to Crystal Palace, Unai Emery’s men had picked up five points from the last nine on offer, winning one and drawing two.
Of those three unbeaten games, victory came in their recent showing before the journey to the capital and after getting the better of another London-based outfit in the shape of Chelsea, the 2-1 home win pushed Villa into eighth in the table.
However, victory on Saturday was the one step forward before taking two steps back and after being dealt a considerable blow to their European hopes at Selhurst Park, Tuesday night’s 4-1 defeat sees Villa slide back down to 10th in the table.
A position that would not be good enough for European qualification as things stand but thanks to Villa’s performances in cup competitions, there are a couple of backdoor routes that could be taken instead.
One of those is on the road to Wembley and with the Cardiff making the trip to the West Midlands on Friday, the last thing that last season’s fourth place Premier League finishers need is this route being shut for maintenance works.
While Cardiff can look at this game as an opportunity to continue the positive momentum that they have crafted under manager Omer Riza – momentum that has managed to put some distance between the Bluebirds and the bottom three.
Momentum that has also seen Cardiff collect five points from their last nine after going three league games unbeaten and with their now being a six-point buffer between themselves and Plymouth in 22nd, this uptick in performance has been vital to their hopes of survival.
Hopes that would have increased after picking a home win over Hull on Tuesday. A fixture that had all the hallmarks of a relegation six-pointer and thanks to Callum Robinson’s second half strike, it was Cardiff who collected the lot.
No league points on offer this Friday and although a deep cup run for a Championship side can cause problems in terms of fixture congestion, the travelling Cardiff contingent would love to move one step closer to at least one of two Wembley visits at the end of the season.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I think the hosts can bounce back in quick fashion by moving into the last eight of this year’s FA Cup. Not quite enough value in a 90-min home win, more when adding Marco Asensio to the scoresheet – a combo that is priced at odds of 2/1 with bet365.
In addition to this, I think both teams will get on the scoresheet, and this is where a correct score tip comes into the mix. Villa to come from behind and win is a little short at 6/1, but I will quite happily take the 2-1 win in 90 minutes at odds of 17/2 instead.
