Aston Villa v Bologna Match Preview
The Champions League anthem blares out of Villa Park’s speakers again on Tuesday and if the decibel limit from the Holte End as is loud as its last play, it could be rather bad news for visitors Bologna.
If only because it was rather bad news for Bayern Munich during Matchday 2 and with the German giants tasting defeat at the hands of Unai Emery’s men, it was arguably Villa’s greatest night of the last 42 years.
Not since the last time Bayern were bested by the West Midlands outfit have the celebrations been so rapturous and with Jhon Duran adding another incredible goal to his record collection, it also means that Villa possess maximum league phase points going into Matchday 3.
The win over Bayern coming not long after victory over Young Boys in Switzerland in their competitive continental opener and with the way that Villa have performed in their first two showings, they are making this European lark look rather easy.
Then again, the same could be said of their Premier League exploits thus far and although they fell behind to an early Raul Jimenez goal at Craven Cottage on Saturday, they would eventually go on to score three unanswered goals of their own in West London.
Admittedly there was an element of good fortune after Matty Cash was adjudged to have handled and with the twelve-yard talents of Emi Martinez being tested once again, the Argentine ‘keeper showed why he played a major role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup success.
Now though, he and his teammates will look to play a major role in victory over Bologna and with the Italian’s qualifying for Europe’s elite under last season’s stewardship of former manager Thiago Motta, they have not been the same since his departure to Juventus.
The surprise act of last season’s Serie A have surprisingly drawn six of their first eight league games of the campaign and although they are solid, the lack of spectacular output sees them currently sit 13th in the table.
A position that would be good enough for an eventual playoff tie in this season’s Champions League but unfortunately for Vincenzo Italiano’s men, they are currently double that ranking after their first two outings.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with Villa’s fearsome home form looking to be a key component on Tuesday, Bologna’s failure to score in this season’s Champions League is another. Therefore, I am backing the home win to nil at odds of 13/8.
In addition to this, I think Villa are going to dominate in front of their own support and it is domination that comes in the shape of a 3-0 win - an outcome that is currently priced at a very tempting 11/1.
