Arsenal v Ipswich Match Preview
Arsenal will be looking to keep the heat on Liverpool in the title race when they host Ipswich on Friday night.
After a bumper-packed festive programme on Boxing Day, the Gunners, who were rampant in a 5-1 win away to Crystal Palace last weekend, have plenty of reason to be in good spirits.
Aside from booking their spot in the EFL Cup semi-finals and being in control of their European affairs, the resurgence of Gabriel Jesus should be marvelled.
Conversely, Ipswich were hammered 4-0 at home to Newcastle, with Alexander Isak’s hat-trick for the Magpies taking them to task.
It has been a fallow period for the Tractor Boys, with just one win from their past six Premier League outings, and the transition from the Championship has been harder than expected.
But what should we expect at the Emirates? I’ve run the rule over the talking points and handpicked some betting tips to support my Arsenal v Ipswich predictions.
Tractor Boys to be rolled over again
Despite seeing his stock rise as a manager during his three years in charge of Ipswich, Kieran McKenna will have been under no illusions about the riches of the Premier League.
Across the English football league pyramid since his appointment, Ipswich ranks fifth for most wins (69), and they are fifth for average goals scored per game (1.82) underlining the Ulsterman’s influence in Suffolk.
Their home form has been alarming, going winless in their opening nine league games (D4, L5) for only the second time in the club’s history.
A trip to face an in-form Arsenal is laden with danger. Mikel Arteta is desperate to deliver the league title to North London that has eluded the club for over 20 years.
Their last defeat was away to Newcastle at the start of November, and they can ill afford to drop points against teams languishing in the relegation zone.
The draw earlier in the month to Everton was deeply frustrating for Arsenal, and Ipswich might attempt a low block as they are bound to see less off the ball.
However, I think Arsenal should have few problems in picking holes in Ipswich’s defence.
Encounters over the years between Arsenal and Ipswich have been few and far between, with the last clash being in the Carling Cup (previous League Cup sponsors) with Arsenal surging to a 3-0 victory at home.
To mix things up a bit, I’m going with Arsenal to win both halves for my first pick, and Paddy Power is advertising tempting odds of 11/10.
Gabriel Jesus to fire home another double
Goals are like buses as sometimes you wait for ages for one before two turn up within moments of each other.
This metaphor perfectly describes Jesus who earned himself a Premier League start against Palace last weekend after notching up a hat-trick against the same side in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.
And Arteta’s decision was vindicated as the striker grabbed a double against the Eagles.
While there may be concerns about Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury, and with a clamouring among the fans to bring in a forward which might fall on deaf ears, Jesus wants to prove he’s a natural No.9.
Jesus has scored five goals in his past two outings in all competitions, as many as he had done in his previous 45 appearances for the Gunners.
Arsenal’s most common route to scoring has been via corners, but I think Jesus will steal the show again with a double. To round off my Arsenal Ipswich predictions, I’m drawn to William Hill’s price of 7/1 for Jesus to net twice against McKenna’s men.
